I know about Honda, they rec. to replace timing belt and waterpump on 176,000kms or 7 yrs whichever comes first.

I think for toyota also same, but you can call any toyota dealer and ask exactly.

FYI

P.S. : You know the parts are cheap but labor are expensive to do the job.

Adnan,

Next time you get your car serviced, ask them to check the timing belt and they should be able to tell you if it needs to be replaced or not. Usually Toyota dealerships do check the timing belt at each service...

Timing belt, I have found in my research in last two months for my Camry 97 (two of them), cannot be easily seen and a visual inspection is not enough to tell whether or not to change, unless it is really damaged.

I have taken my car to few mechanics and done some search on the web, and everywhere I got the same response - you can go a bit over (in mileage terms) what the original document for the book or the dealer says but that is the safest bet and mechanics will not be able to judge the condition.

Moreover, the cost of the belt is not much, but the labor involved is what costs more - the mechanic would keep the car for anywhere between 4-6 hrs.

The water pump is usually changed with the timing belt - solely because there is no extra labor involved and if ever the water pump gets into a problem after the timing belt has been changed without changing the water pump, one will end up paying the same labor twice.

For Camry 98, the timing belt plus water pump should cost anywhere between 450 to 550 and timing belt alone will cost may be $100 less.

I got Camry 98 LE Timing Belt & Water Pump changed in less than $200 ... just couple months back. Car is sitting at around 185K ...

I can pass you the contact if required.

BTW, you can not see Timing belt without opening the casing - if you are doing that then might as well change it.
