Hi,
I landed on Sunday and planning to stay for a week and return back to US. I am planning to move 6 months to 1 year later. For applying for health card, is it advisable to do it now or apply when we move in permanently? Will it have adverse effect if I apply for health card when I move in later? Has anyone done like this?
Pl. advice me at the earliest.
Thanks.
I would suggest you to apply for OHIP card before you go back to the USA.
Thanks and regards.

Hi biomed,
Thanks for the fast reply.
For applying for OHIP card, they ask either the bank statement or lease agreement etc or temporary drivers licence.
My question is
Bank said that I should wait for some more time to get the bank statement by mail and so it is not possible for me. If I apply for G1 now and apply for OHIP and when I move in from USA permanently, will there be any problem in getting G license?
Waiting for your response at the earliest. Thanks.
We took the OHIP card about a month back and hence I have had ample opportunity to read the fine print!
Apart from providing a bank statement or a credit card statement as support for your proof of residence, you're also required to sign an undertaking that you will continue to live in Ontario province for the next 180 days. So, if you're not planning to make Ontario your permanent residence for the next 180 days after applying for your OHIP card then don't apply for it - as otherwise it might appear that you're intentionally making a false statement!
Hi Daks,
Thanks for the advice.
Last week, when I landed, I went to OHIP office and read the form. As I was planning to return to US in a week, I didn't apply for OHIP card.
I met my friend who applied and went out of the country for more than 7 months. When he returned and started using your card, he was told that his card had been cancelled because he was out of the country for more than 7 months in a year even though the expiry on the card was until 2007. He applied for a new card and he has a 3 month waiting period from the time he entered now. He paid for the medical bills from his pocket.
Hi Raajen
Tell your friend not to misplace the invoices/receipts for the medical expenses - as they would be required when he claims for a deduction for medical expenses when he files for his income tax return. I got to know about this when I was going through submitting the income tax return about a week back. However, luckily I retained the original receipts and hence claimed the deduction.
