Dear all,
My 2 month old son will be due for his first round of vaccination in a week. When I was discussing the same with our family physician, he suggested tylenol for the baby as pain killer. I am not sure if I can go with his advice.
Any suggestions??
Thanks
BAsh.
Hi BAsh,
This is just normal procedure followed in Canada.
The first shot can give fever/ pain resulting in fever to the baby . Therefore, the doctors advise us to give Tylenol (one dose) 30 minutes before the proposed shot so that the risk of fever coming as a result of the shot is minimal.
if you go to the appointment, you can find many 2 nd and thrid time mommy's giving Tylenol at the doctor's office waiting room just minutes before the baby gets the shot.
all the best and do update us as to how the vacination went.

If you are paranoid to give any oral medication b4 vaccination , you can buy a patch that will do the same job .

Hi BAsh,
My son had vaccination in 2nd & 4th month. I didn't give any Tylenol as I was suggested by doctor to give tylenol only, if he gets fever after vaccination. He cried for less than a minute and after that was normal. make sure you don't feed him before vaccination.
Good Luck

it is better to keep Tylenol at home in case of fever and pain. I did not kept this medication at home when i did his first vaccination and my son was suffering a lot with pain and fever. I have to take him down to the pharmacy (walking distance) and unfortunately they dont have the stock and i have to call my husband urgent to get me the medication

I have a Indonesian nanny who suggests applying baby Vicks mixed with coconut oil on the inject spot immediately, I made the mix for my twins each time they went for vaccinations and applied it there and then in Dr's clinic. You have to reapply it every 4 hours for 2 days. I'm a mom of twins and have done this for my kids in their (various) vaccinations. They never had fever or pain. Many of my friends and family have done this and vouch for it. In fact my sister in law calls me from India to send her baby Vicks as it is not available in India (Delhi, I mean).
Hope this helps.....................Jona
