Hello ,

Me and my wife are PERMANENT RESIDENTS of Canada currently residing in Boston, MA, USA. We have already LANDED and got our PR cards with us.

We are planning to move to Edmonton, Alberta sometime in March of 2009.
We are expecting a baby in November this year and would like to know the procedure that needs to be followed so that we can bring the baby with us.

I have tried to read up on this on the web site but cant find the information i am looking for.
Here are some questions i have:

Can i apply for my baby's PR from here or do we have to do it in Canada
How long would it take to get the PR for my baby from here if we can do it or from Canada
Does the baby need to land after it gets the PR
If we need to apply from Canada can the baby leave Canada after the application is filed
I also read that i will have to get a medical done for my baby... is this something we need to do before we move to Canada or can it be done later
How long will it take for my baby to get medical benefits in Canada? Should i get all the immunization shots here to wait till i get to Canada?

Thanks for all your help in this process.

We greatly appreciate it.
Thanks
Yusuf

When the baby is born you will get the baby a Birth Certificate. The Passport should be the next item on the list to obtain. Also inform the Canadian Immigration Services of a birth of a child to you both abroad. See where it leads you to. See if they will provide you with the sponsorship forms soon after that.

With a US Passport the Baby can travel to Canada and stay for a period of six months.

You as Parents, with Canadian PR, can bring in the baby. Now, as a Canadian PR and being in Canada, you are in a position to apply for sponsoring of the baby, your dependent from within Canada. It is a CATCH 22 system and it calls for the sponsor to be with in Canada. The process may take slightly longer than six months. But you by then, can call and find the correct procedure from the CIC, to keep the baby here, by applying for an exemption. Six months is a long time and I am sure it will be sufficient time to plan the steps you need to take after landing. One of them will be a medical check up. There are approved Doctors who will conduct the same for you and report the results to the Canadian Immigration Center.

Baby's Immunizations schedule will call for some or all of the procedures to be completed after the birth and within a period of six months. So, your Doctor in Boston will be the judge of it. I am sure he will advice you on these matters prior to your bringing in the Baby into Canada or its travels.

Since the Baby is a visitor in the initial stages, please see if the Alberta Health Coverage for the baby is provided by them there. Please see if the reporting of a baby born outside of the country will permit the baby with an entry with the waiver of the formalities, as adoption systems of a foreign born Baby, permits an entry and immediate coverage to the Baby upon arrival here in Canada. I don't see why the system cannot accommodate yours? A request will be the best that I could suggest for you to do as the time progresses. Here are two links:

http://www.health.alberta.ca/ahcip/AHCIP_form-AHC0102.pdf

After the approval of the PR for the Baby, you may have to cross the border and re-enter at a location close to the south of Alberta. This link will provide you with a few of the crossing points, you choose the mode to suit the weather conditions. : http://www.ucanimport.com/Border_Crossing_Info.aspx

Congratulations. Hope this answers most or all of the questions.

Freddie.

Yes you can.

I know it will be difficult, not having the Hospital Insurance for the baby when you land there in Alberta.

Make a phone call to CIC and get the forms and the correct procedures before you travel here to file the papers.

Freddie.
