Why not Electrical or Electronics Engg. I have seen people in these two fields always excel - no matter how the market is. After few years of experience, he could get on with P.Engg.

As someone mentioned above, Pharmacist is also another good profession. I believe Canada or for that matter - North America will always have Healthcare professionals in high demand, regardless of the market conditions.

I don't want the kid to HAVE to be a "salaryman". A nuclear engineer or an aerospace engineer will have to function in a corporate environment and can't setup an independent practise.

The kid can go into a corporate environment after obtaining a qualification that'll allow him to setup an independent practise, so if the company goes bust - he can hang out his own shingle and isn't obliged to look for a job.

I'm not clear on what/how a electrical or electronics P Engg could setup an independent practise. will appreciate inputs.

Let the kid know how to "Think".
Teach him/her how to distinguish between right and wrong.
Rest, the kid can figure out.

It's obvious that next generation is always smarter.
