...and a Baby Memory Book can be a good idea too.

There is something more than that. Registery. Most of the to be parent register at toysrus and they add their wish items in the list.
You can also check with their names and see their registry. You can buy the item for them which they wish to buy for their baby and it also get your information in registry and they cancle the item.
We like this is so much which stop duplicated gifts. Teddy bears are good, but no use than soft toy.
Kids stuff is expensive. If you give them something little but useful to baby parent will be very happy.
Check with their names with registry or simple ask them are you regiester somewhere.
I found baby shower here, mostly is to helping parent also. Friends and relative buy all necessary stuff for parent Atleast 50-70% and rest they buy as they need with baby. That's how I have seen baby shower gifts....
Also, instead of teddy bear if you buy small rattle which is developmental toy ....baby will use it for more than 9 month.
Mostly parent knows what they need, that's how also registry helping them.
I have seen some parent complain, I got gift as 3 swing what I will do.. return receipt will always help them, if you dont know what they are looking for.
I would say, without 'showing' what people buy or read..if we think of 'what baby can use it'.. makes more sense of baby shower gift.
I have no. of friends they told me they did not buy anything for their baby in 1st year as they had received all as gift.
Also, buying 1 year old pair of cloth can help...
If nothing we know about babies n registry..best is gift card so parent can use as they wish..its like cash money.
We have received mostly gift cards..in 100s.... bcoz baby items are expensive...I guess.
MR,
That's a reasonable approach and that's what i have done and so did my friends for me. The little bear is the shagun Here, it's more about the baby shower than meeting the baby for the first time. And u know the craziest thing, one of those shagun doggies is my son's fav to sleep with
Hope this helps.

have u ever gone to a baby shower? Because mother to be's usually open gifts in front of everyone, no one wants to look bad (read cheap) when everyone else is watching.
I was thinking of buying the nice gift for the shower and then when going to see the baby, presenting a teddy bear or other such 'cute' toy.
Most common mistake of baby shower gifts.. are following.
1. If you think everything for babies is expensive. Not true. You can buy developmental toy only cost less than $10 and baby use it for more than 1 year.
2. Buying very personalised item..may be not useful to parent..or they get double..if you buy big thing.. always ask them first..did you already purchase or not.? If you can't ask..best is gift car in 100s..
Like..stroller..or chair or crib, or diaper bag.. mostly parent like to chose for their baby..
3. Buying soft toys.. it just stack up.. and not safe for baby..until they are very small..once they grow up .. they like more developmental toy..and here toys are age specific..which means so much and help in developmental way
4. Baby's stuff is expensive too..so if we can help parent by gifting..wondeful.
5. Buying bottle...baby may start with different bottle and stick with that bottle only..so no use.
6. Buying pair of cloth with is 0-3 month... My baby never fit into 0-3 when born... he started with 3 month clothes as new born.. and later he always need bigger..some need smaller..so buying pair for 6 month to 1 year can help rather than buying very small..or very big..so they dont use it until 2-3 years and parent need space to save more than 2-3 years..
Baby is preceious.. In this country its very expensive and need stuff for baby .. so gifting is one way of helping as well.
