what legalities are necessary for a new baby?

eg. OHIP card/S.I.N. number/passport/child tax credit/bank accounts/RESP/birth certificate/ etc...

How does one go about these things?

Also, which of them are absolutely necessary and which can wait till the baby is older?

Congratulations Beauty Salon!...Is it a boy or a girl? Name?

I'd say put a fast track on the OHIP card and the birth certificate(which you will need of a lot of the paper work) and maybe SIN
Child tax credit will be processed when you file your next tax returns(not sure if you can do anything about it before)....
the rest can wait...resp maybe a good idea...if you are so inclined.

procedures for everything should be here...call the #'s and they will be glad to help.

It's a boy, we call him "Mikey" and he's a handful already :) . the birth certificate paperwork says it will arrive in two months - is that a fact??

ok gotta go, it's a dairy farm in my house :)

2 months sounds about right.
If you think he is a handful now...from personal experience(2 kids) he is just getting warmed up. So hope you have some family to help for atleast the first few months and dont be too hard on yourself :)

Love to 'Mikey'

Congratulations! I am sure he's a bundle of joy :) SIN card has no immediate use for a baby/child unless you're planning to contribute to RESP for Mikey in which case you would need to have a SIN card. Otherwise, the priority is to get the OHIP card, birth certificate and after that the passport.

As regards the delays in issuing birth certificates - it is probably true it might take quite a while. A couple of months back I read in the newspapers that it's taking 8-10 weeks to get a birth certificate and people have been complaining about it.

Congratulations BS ( and to your husband too) - and tons of love to mikey! Though handfull, must be feeling great I am sure.

I had once read that Indira Gandhi had once said - A Nation is like a child - each year you feel that the previous year was easy to handle. So do not start feeling - oh god I wish he could grow three years in one - because you will find him more difficult to handle as he grows up.

And advice from an old fashioned Indian - keep the diary farm running till you really feel it is creating a big loss - don't worry for the small losses!
