Hi,
I am moving to Canada on 2nd Sept'09. Need to book the tickets in couple of days.
I am from IT background, so wanted to move to a place where it would be comparitlvely easy(though I know easy is not the word in today's scenario) to find the job. Please suggest where I should land and which area should I stay in.
Thanks and Regards,
Navdeep
I do understand what you are asking and you want to know where the most number of companies are based in Canada and in what city. I can provide you with a few but you will have to go through each and every company's listing and jot down as you go along as you will need most of the important details that you want to know and how to approach them for your personal use, after arrival.
For this you will need to know the history and development of the industry and the amalgamations and closures etc., too. You will get to know some or most of it as time progresses. Also you will need a mentor to guide you in this. Most of the people who have had a long stay here will be the ones that will be able to brief you in this and some who have had dealings with them will be the ones to guide you further in to their activities, with the rise and their fall also. CD does not have a website big enough to accommodate the answer. Nor is it easy to compile here.
Most of the people who are in this industry are employed with links and cross links and come recommended. How they got there is no mystery. While most of them are climbing the ladder, you will see a few taking the elevator. There is more to it than meets the eye.
About 10:30 IST On: August 19th, 2009 you give yourself some time and away from your friends and the family and participate in the Webinar to get a glimpse of the IT industry. Here is the link: https://event.on24.com/eventRegistration/EventLobbyServlet?target=registration.jsp&eventid=153633&sessionid=1&key=2AEC3ADECB8772763932DBC7148FBA9B&partnerref=itwintstl&sourcepage=register
Go through all of the resources and get an idea of the vastness of the industry. It is not big but plays an important role in the world of the IT industry as we know.
You can see the salary, which a post commands and what it is that you can expect when the job market opens up.
Here is another small link at Yahoo : http://dir.yahoo.com/Computers_and_Internet/News_and_Media/Magazines/
Member Organizations: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_Technology_Association_of_America#Member_Organizations
Some you search and some are interactive links.
You will have to fill in all of the details to access the FAST FIFTY companies list just to see their activities and please provide them with your details and obtain an entry to their website. You will need this for survival.

Now you can do your own research and move on from here. You only have a very short time at your disposal and might find it taxes your time at your end. Sorry to see that the others in the IT industry are having a break or on a holiday and not able to fill in the gap for you. They will appear on the scene as time progresses.
Hope this helps you a little.
Good Luck.
Freddie.
Thank you so much Freddie for your valuable inputs. I would go through all the links you have provided and will attend the webinar.
Actually if someone would ask me which city has most IT companies in India. I would say Bangalore, and the area would be Whitefield and Electronic city.
So, I want some similar information for Canada.
Well, I think there are 2 perspectives here.
1. Software Product Related Development : Ottawa (Services Industry here is mostly catered to Feds). Maybe Montreal too, to some extent.
2. Software Services Related Development : GTA
Now, you move where your skills matter the most. I moved to GTA after spending 5 years in Ottawa, because my background is 'Services'.
All the best

Thank you this is something I was looking for.
So, based on this information we have planned to move to GTA. We also have relatives in Mississauga, so will stay there for a week and then search the room. My family would be coming back after a week and I'll stay there for atleast 3 months and hunt for job. To search job in GTA, is it wise to stay in Mississauga itself. If yes, which area. I will not like to spend much during these three months.
Thank you once again for helping out.

Well, you can also live in Brampton. I don't know about Missisuaga but Brampton is supposed to be cheaper.
You can live right near Bramalea City Center (lots of apartment buildings).
Or, near the Bramalea Go Station (there is an almost new apartment building with some vacant units). It is a walking distance from the Go Station but walking during winter can be a challange.
I would prefer Bramalea City Center as there is lot of shops, etc there apart from bus connections.
Staying at these places, you will get the 'Yorkdale Go Bus' as well as 'Trinity Common Go Bus'. They will take you to North Toronto in an hour or so.
And, from Go Station - you can get a Train to Toronto Downtown. I believe, it takes 40 min.
All the best
