FIDO: You haven't weighed in the advantages of living in India.

1) You can get any prescription drug without a prescription. That would include narcotics like Tylenol 3. You can get as many as you wish!

2) If you have a \\\"Chacha-Mama\\\" in high places, it's easy to find work.

3) You can cheat on your taxes, without the taxman coming after you.

4) If you are lucky to be from one of the elite classes (read\\\"SC/ST\\\";), you can have a whale of a time. You just need to scrape through with a \\\"pass class\\\" and you will get hired. And then you can get promoted in your work, without having to work smart.

5) You don't have to buy a pack of cigarettes to \\\"smoke\\\". There is so much pollution, you can fill your lungs for free!

6) You need not have any respect for time. You can be \\\"somewhat late\\\" (read 1-4 hours), be it work, \\\"an important appointment\\\" or a visit to your relatives place.

7) You can make money \\\"under the table\\\", without a sense of guilt or shame.

8) You can borrow, and refuse to pay your creditors....... It will take years, for the creditor to get a judgment against you (if he is lucky). But yes, you might goons gunning for you, to collect on behalf of the one who lent you money.

9) You can go on with \\\"Kuch bhi chaltha hain\\\" attitude and no one will find anything wrong with that!

10) You don't get parking tickets. You can run someone over, as long as you have the right connections!

At this time, this is all I can think of. Yes this list might be incomplete... If there are fellow desis who want to add to the list, you are more than welcome!

Just to add another thing you will get in india:

NO harassment at the border or inside the country(India) when you enter/leave or stay as an Indian.....

Take the case of the Somali born Canadian cizen in the news recently....or the countless times border agents make you go through ' secondary screening' in North America.....I include both USA and Canada in that list....

Fido, you are right in mentioning these points. But by mentioning these points, you are deviating from the main topic. We - in general - the people from India - come to Canada for better career (that means for better jobs and hence money). We do not come here - primarily - to escape the facts mentioned in your points i.e. escape bribes, traffic woes and escaping rapes and then going to the police station!

Therefore the advantages you have mentioned come after one gets a good job and hence better quality of life.

If you feel life is kind to women in India think again. There is always the risk of leaving the house on your own after the dark, misbehavior in crowded places or even non crowded places ( ppl may not tell you but this is a daily occurence), possible biases in theworkplace. The sense of security here is far more for women. Also, I dont think I would like to go back to waiting 3-4 hours in a traffic jam to visit family and friends.

Plus there are other factors below which need to be considered as well ...

Corruption at virtually every place ... ever heard of getting raped and having to bribe the police just to register a complaint ........... You dial the police here and let me know if they don't come to your door step shortly .....

Traffic sense .............. I count this as worse than corruption ......... countless people die on roads because of this -- lives which could have been saved easily .

Crime ... Just compare the common crime percentage - be it pick pocketing / mugging , murders ... not to mention eve teasing ...

Pollution ............ I am sure you have already experienced the difference ..

Better values --- lightning struck 3 in a Brampton park 2 days back and residents in the area rushed and provided CPR ........... Recall the case of the girl who was thrown out of a train to resist eve teasing .... 10 yrs back ....... and she kept lying there besides the track for hours .....

You cannot bribe here to set your meter / parking tickets off ...... try offering the bus driver $1/- in stead of $2.75 .... values mean a lot .

Power water and other utilities are available when you need them ....

Adulteration ............ did you hear about artificial milk in India ?

Ever heard of the Indian Govt supporting some one if they did not have income to support themselves ......... here it is done and I ve seen such people maintaining cars and apartments .....

Have you checked the difference in infrastructures ?

I could go on and on but these are points that one needs to consider while comparing Canada and India ...

and BTW Cdn_Dude (not being personal ) , these points are available to everyone regardless of their income .

At times I find it ridiculous to compare a place you have been in for 25-30 yrs with a place where you have been for less then an year ............ if some one was to go to Nunavut and return after a week , he would carry the impression that Canada is 'Nunavut ' ...

4 yrs out of 70 thats almost 5% .... a small cost for having the permanent option of changing yours and your family's environment at will ..... no one is forcing you to stay here after that ....... you can always go back and re start ....

At the same time I m not saying that Canada is surely better as that's best determined by your priorities as per previous posts so decide accordingly ... But do not decide in haste and weigh in all the pros and conses .....

Vivek,

I guess you are not in IT and struggling for last few months (which is normal for most immigrants). It sounds that you are young guy (probably around 25-28 yrs. and unmarried) and this is the best age to come to Canada. But due to bad economy this is not the right time to come to Canada (even at the best of time it is not easy for non-IT immigrants in Canada).

Since you are here for only three months, I will advice you to pack your bags and go back to India as soon as possible. There is no point in doing odd jobs here and it is very frustating for people like you who has done Engg. & MBA. There is no point of waiting for Canadian citizenship for four more years.

You need to decide it fast and if you decide to stay here then forget about going back to India and if you want to go back to India, then forget about Canada. After 1-2 years, if you still feel that you need to move back to Canada then come back to Canada (you will be better prepared next time, in case you decide to come back and hopefully economy will be better).

Nobody in India will give you any credit for your experience in call centre in Canada and if you delay then everybody will ask you what you were doing for 1 year in call centre. If you decide to stay here, then you forget that you have option to go back to India and focus on your stay here only.

That was an unfortunate case. This things happen in India and rest of the world also.

The press has blown this out of proportion.

Cdn_dude ,

Though I personally agree with you in keeping career paramount regardless of where you are , I have found a lot of immigrants compromising on career because of quality of life or children's future .

Yes, because they do not have any other way out. Also, that's the secondary reason of staying in Canada after failing on the primary reason to immigrate to Canada. Most of them give this reason after exhausting all of their funds in their efforts to come to Canada only to find the hopeless job situation. In this case, they cannot go back to India - empty handed because of various reasons.
