Hi all
Id like to hear of personal experiences of immigrants, who have been successful at getting an IT job or stories of some immigrant you know who has been successful. Along with all the great ideas and advice posted on this site, I think personal stories have an added charm of motivation. Hearing of some one else being successful, who has been in a smilar situation as you, gives a lot of hope and courage.
When i came to Canada , the US company I was workign for gave me a job in Canada. It lasted for 1 year 3 months after which the project ended...after that I couldnot get a IT job. 2 1/2 year gone without job....

I once made a mistake, but I was wrong about it.
You can go to US on TN visa if you have canadian citizenship.

Hi
How useful is applying online on the job postings on various job sites if one is not physically present in Canada. I ask this because I have been almost convinced by the veterans in the IT industry that to get a job in canada applying online is a total waste of time.

This is true that most of Canadian Employers prefer a face to face interview before offering a job(Probably to check how many legs, hands, eyes, ears you have )
Fortunately before I moved back to Canada from USA I was almost confirmed by employer during my Telephonic Technical Interview .After that I appeared for a Final face to face interview but that was mostly a chat session
Couple of things I noticed from Employer perspective
(1)They Put weightage on Resume. You need to reflect your real project experience details not copying/adding genaral IT stuffs
(2) They always look for a guy with similar type of experience and prefer Big Company/Project name
(3) Soft Skills like communication, eye contact, body language, sence of humour etc
If you want to apply for job online you really need to be perfect in Telephonic Interview ..concentrate more on Technical skills and Communication
Hope this info will help you
thanks

Hi ani,
You mean in todays times too companies do take up telephonic interviews. I am pretty confident of my communication skills and command over english language but am not sure if I can manage someone calling me up knowing that I am based in europe.
Which means the resume becomes the only medium which can be used to convey my personality. Now what I found out here is that, unlike europe, resumes should be very concise which means I have to put all of those 8 years of exp, tech skills, projects etc in 1 or 2 sheets and still have it attractive enough. I have tried to achieve that but am still not really sure if I have the correct format in place.
As you must have figured out by now I am not too sure of the Plan of action that I should be undertaking to get a job in canada before actually landing up here. So I would appreciate if you could please put in some more inputs in this regard.
Thanks again..........

In current IT world you need to be in cutting age technologies where there is still short of resources otherwise it is very difficult to get a job from outside Canada
If your profile has demand in Canadian IT market surely recruiting agencies can arrange for Telephonic Interview
You really need to look for some Genuine Recruiting agencies who has connection with big IT companies in Canada.Woropolise, monster are all common websites which actually viewed by small-medium recruiting agencies and most of the cases they don't have any direct contact with the client rather they work with another Big Recruiting agencies
Per my knowledge following recruiting agencies /companies are good in Canadian IT market

One more thing ... for senior level positions employers look for detail resume which could be 4-5 pages
Thanks
