I use winter tires and recommand. Worth investing in winter tire, just buy a good brand and store them properly as soon as winter ends. With winter tires you may experience noisy ride on highway, fast wornout and 15-25% more fuel consumption. I think, Positive point is 20-30% better control in wet/icy condition. You won't go wrong if you buy this year because looks like we are going to have heavy snow this winter.

Thanks all,
I did get winter tires but is expensive.... $ 700 +...with rims changed as well....
Maybe I am a relatively new driver, but have never installed winter tires. The safety largely depends on your driving style.
SUVs with AWD/4WD and winter tires end up in ditches during snow storms since the driver feels 'extra safe' and ends up being careless.
If you are driving according to the road and weather conditions, all-seasons work well too. If you do not care for these conditions, then Snow tires or Winter tires cannot help you much.
Pardon for my ignorance, speaking from my limited 5+ years driving experience.

They will not help over ice. You still cannot break on ice.
