Old Age eligibility raised to 67 from 65. all new immigrants who are no paying taxes in anticipation of getting pension will now have to wait 2 extra years as of no. who knows by the time all these new immigrants become eligible the limit might go to 70 years and also the benefits gets reduced.

for some people who want to return to this land and claim/enjoy the benefits at 65yrs have to wait.

I am starting this topic for input of fellow canadian desi's

Good move by the Canadian Govt.. This will be a lesson especially for a section of immigrants who bring their parents to Canada and without that parents doing anything to improve Canada, start taking OAS and cheating natives.

But I am very sad to note that this is coming into effect only from 2023 which is like 11 years away. I especially wanted the Canadian govt. to teach a lesson to the parents of immigrants who are looking for this free money from 2012.

Peace

The Canadian Govt. should also think about those who after obtaining citizenship, left the country and planning to return after the age of 65 to enjoy the benefits. There should be mandatory requirement of continued residency of at least previous 5 years or must have contributed taxes for 15 years.

Indian government also should also reciprocate the same way towards OCI's & PIO's the same way towards their property holdings, inheritance, bank deposits an other claims to holdings. If they have not lived for a minimum of 15 years and paid taxes their holdings in India should be nationalized and given to the poor and downtrodden from the same locality. May be they could be handed over to the malis, ayahs, house servants, car driver and others who worked their behinds off for the family and stayed back in India.

They should also be back taxed from the date of immigration.

Yes. VM. Bang on !
The Indian govt. should make a law that once you leave for Canada and TAKE Canadian citizenship, You will have to reimburse the subsidized cost of Indian education back to the Indian govt. at Canadian education value. Besides it should also impose stiff taxes of the uneducated and uncontributing parents of all these Canadian citizenship holders who are going to Canada for free welfare/ health so that they should not be able to hold property in India and the list goes on.
May be Delhite can PM me (with his contact details)so that I can forward him the details.

But then,Peace

Old age pension requires the claimant to have lived in Canada for 20 years, so I can't see how any parents, who showed up in their late years could qualify to this benefit. Even those who arrived here in their late 40s may not qualify, even if they paid taxes till they retired at 65. I think TK is wrong to presume that the old folks arriving on sponsorship are actually drawing old age pension. Is anyone aware of such real life situations?

Global Indian,
With due respect, you are so off from the realities and the benefits of Canada.

This is the extract from the OAS website :

"Scenario 1 - People living in Canada
You must be 65 years of age or older.
You must live in Canada and be a Canadian citizen or a legal resident at the time we approve your pension application.
You must have lived in Canada for at least 10 years after turning 18."

You are not understanding the bigger picture. A typical Desi immigrates to Canada in his early 30's and by atleast the late 30's be brings his family and his spouse's family. It will total 3-4 people. The parents will immigrate in their late 50's for the female and late 60's for the male. The parents will be at their son's / daughter's care for 10 years. This will be a time when their health would be good.
So when they turn max. 70 for female and 80 for male, they will start drawing the OASwithout contributing anything to my mother country Canada. They will not leave for India as OAS will come to them only after 10 more years. They will start to live in Canada only. They will start clogging the medical system of Canada and make it a pain for educated immigrants to get healthcare. These old people can stay in the hospital line for hours at end. Can the educated immigrant afford to stay in line from 9-5?
This is not only for desi's but all nationalities.

These people make it miserable for educated immigrants to live in their adopted mother land , Canada, though they pay through their noses.

Not only this but the parents of immgrants clog the food banks, they clog the welfare system of Canada, they clog the freebies awarded to the educated immigrants who do the bulk of remitting taxes to the govt...

I worked and paid my taxes to the Govt. of canada for 9 years but I was chased out of the country by situations of the non contributor citizens. I helped to stimulate the Canadian economy by choosing the costliest insurance, costliest phone plan, costliest groceries but now I am rediculed that I will be coming back to Canada after age 65 to get OAS and CPP. I was chased out of Canada by Canadians and CD's to go to a land that I swore that I will never go to.

Peace
