Lalitha,
Buy second hand or picking from the trash is almost the same. It may come with bedbugs. So you are better picking from the trash. Or you may have to buy something in Kijiji which was gifted and not used. Many Kijiji sellers will deliver for free or we have a Sri lankan (Guna) who will do delivery for very cheap.
Once I bought a new bed from a Indian liquidation sale. The head board was not laminated on the sides and after a month had bed bugs and so I threw the head board out.
TV is very important in Canada. Buy from Kijiji. You will get a older model for 1/4th of the new price. in 2011, I sold my TV for $ 10 (with a $ 14 remote that I bought a week back). So you will get good offers on TV.
Try to buy from IKEA. It is stylish and cheap.
Iqbal is a hyped up store. Biriyani will be decent but too much oil. From my experience, avoid Indian stores and switch to English or Chines food. I found that many Indian items cost a ton of money. I would switch to pulses, greens, steamed veggies, meat, salads etc.. of course Doasi/Idly/Chutney / podi are cheap and south Indian.
Hope this helps.

For furniture, Ikea is an option. But you may not find those very durable that can stand multiple moves. Another option is United Furniture Warehouse, they are owned by Brick but sell inexpensive stuff. Look it up, there is a store in Scarborough near Lawrence and Kennedy. Also there are a lots of furniture store on Kennedy between Lawrence and Ellesmere - go for a walk and see the options.

Dining table: can be bought used, you could find a good set for 150 dollars, or you could get a new one from the Chinese guy I listed below for 250 dollars.
Bed frame: can be bought used if there are no bed bugs, but I would get new. You could easily get a new frame from the Chinese seller for 250 dollars - see below
Mattress: Dont buy used, get new ones. I am not sure what size you are looking for, but Brick and Leons have special every 2 weeks. A queen sized mattress can be bought for close to 600 dollars (brand name). If either of you have back issues, a good mattress is a must. I wouldn't recommend the Chinese seller I listed below for mattes as he dint had a good collection when I visited his place the last time - 4 years ago.
There is also a brand new furniture seller in kijiji that sells durable chinese made furniture (real wood). I purchased from him few years ago, he has bed frames that doesnt need box spring.

For TV, wait till boxing day and you can get new TV for very good price. You could get a 42 inch plasma or LED for close to 400 dollars and 50 inch plasma or LED for 650 dollars or lower. You could also look for used TV's on kijiji, you may get something for cheaper price, but it will be heavier/older plasma/led models.
Let us know if you have other questions. CD can be resourceful if used wisely.
Sears has some great sales now for mattresses.
NY-Desi,
What you are recommending is all high priced. I am not sure if OP is looking to buy at such a high price.
I would recommending sleeping on a mat in the bedroom or a matress on the floor.
Sofa set can be plastic chairs / ikea chairs.
Dining table is a must. It can be bought second hand. Lap top can be used in this.
You can also but a center table.
A TV and TV stand is essential and it can both be bough second hand.
Also visit all Garage (Garbage) sales on saturdays and sundays, near your house. Quote 1/4 th of the price listed. Some may laugh but most will give it to you. Garage sales are a great way to furnish your house. I remember a ice tray bought in 2002 for 25 cents. I just threw it out in 2011 before I came to India.
Penny saved is penny earned.

Many ( not every one) will have a limited budget to spend on household items when they move to a new country unless they have a fat bank balance and willing to spend liberally.
TK suggestions are practical and valuable.
Sorry, I do not agree with you. The prices I listed are not high, they are the current price for brand new items. Its up to OP to decide what they want to chose, based on their budget. I am sure OP is mature enough to make that decision. I just gave options between high priced stores like Brick, Leons and your suggestion of going through garbage. Not everyone think like you TK, so even though your suggestions might be valuable and practical to some as Gurram said, its not applicable to everyone.
