Dude,
The problem with Sigh Gurudwara is that mostly they speak Hindi and I felt very uncomfortable there (as I did not know Hindi).
Food bank people are really nice and they speak in English and you will feel at home there. Besides even though they see many people come in cars to pick up food, they gennuinely try to help you by giving food.
Hope this helps.

Peace by Murali

Ashwani :
Guruthuvawara in Canada is not South Indian friendly. I admit that they do a wonderful job (of feeding people all over the world) but SI's will not feel very comfortable.
All kinds of people feel comfortable in food bank.

IT friend who cheated / acted cheap :

1. Though working in Oracle USA, he refused to hire a cab/ bus but wanted me to take him to a 1 $ store to buy scarf which he bought for $ 1.15
2. Invited me to a restaurant to discuss about SI (South India) but paid only his share of the buffet.
3. Irritated me by telling me how much salary he got in ORacle, how great a guy he was but not spending any money.
4. Was looking to hear about how to earn extra money in Canada by not doing anything (Seperation from spouse to get more money, GST/HST credits, where free stuff is given etc...)
5. Made me drive my car for a certain kms. and paying me only gas money and nothing for my time wasted on him listening to his stupid talk.

Etc.. Etc...
Hope this enlightens you about Desi's esp. SI's

I don't like generalizing. It's always better to act according to the specific situation. Any person can ask for help, it's upto us to give it or not. The husband of the lady I spoke with is a post graduate from Montreal working as senior manager in a bank. If she had thought like TK she would have shied away but she didn't. She was giving me a lot of helpful suggestions on spending quality time and shopping.

1. You could have refused to give him a ride.
2. Why are you expecting someone else to pay for your food? I go out with friends and we all do an equal split of the bill or pay our part.
3. Well, that's his choice not to spend money. It's his money, isn't it?
4. He probably figured you are well rounded on advising people how to find free stuff, credits and such. Pot calling kettle black?
5. You could have refused to give him a ride.

1. You could have refused to give him a ride.-Probably. But I always try to help Desi's and always get stabbed at the back.

2. Why are you expecting someone else to pay for your food? I go out with friends and we all do an equal split of the bill or pay our part.- I generally donot. This individual said that we should go for lunch and discuss SI (South Indian stuff). So why would I be expected to pay for his invitation. I did not call him to lunch to discuss.

3. Well, that's his choice not to spend money. It's his money, isn't it? - Yes it is. But he should not be commenting that others are stingy and he should not be expoilting people.

4. He probably figured you are well rounded on advising people how to find free stuff, credits and such. Pot calling kettle black? - No comments.

5. You could have refused to give him a ride. - See point no 1.

To Lalitha ->
Just was sharing my experience. You will have no idea that even senior people will act very cheap one day. I learnt this so many times in Canada. Just give more time and see. The reason for my post was to advise you to be very careful.
