Winter clothing.

Lalitha,
As winter is coming, is your family prepared. During the start of winter, all winter dresses will be high price. It will be very cheap at Buffalo but you can't go there.
I know of one very high earning software engineer who came from Oracle, USA to Canada and he himself took me (my car ., my petrol) to a one $ store and bought a scarf for $ 1 from that. He now (he is on CD) some time advises that I am cheap.
Hope some CD's can advise you one where you can buy cheap winter clothing.

Peace by Murali

I have to totally agree with gktaurus here . I do not see his comments provocative or out of the line . It is not evident that he is advocating to live lavishly . There is nothing wrong to live with higher standards and keep raising that bar . In order to do it one MUST start with his thinkings .
There is a very fine line between living frugal or being cheap .
A S/W engineer running around to get the best value for his buck is frugal and begging food from food banks or picking it from IKEA dumpsters is cheap .I am confident that none of us came here to have the life standard drop so low .

Having said that i am not at all against on buying furniture from Kijiji ( exception is mattress for known obvious reasons ) .. There are plenty of very good deals for new or barely used things . Only downside is that you may have to drive too much and arrange delivery .

As for Lalitha she is one of the lucky immigrants whose husband got a decent job right after landing . Personally for me it took almost 5 years to even meet my ends as I made some wrong choices initially and one of them was to be surrounded by wrong set of minds .

DO NOT and I repeat again DO NOT go cheap on winter clothing if you have plans to stay in Canada for long . You don't need to buy Canadian goose Jacket but make sure that it is branded and well made . Winners is a good place to start looking for good deals . Columbia makes very warm and long lasting down fill jackets . Shoes should be water proof ( not just water resistant ) with a good lining inside .

When I landed I bought a mattress for 100 $ as I was trying to save every penny . It hardly lasted me for a year and left a back pain to linger for long time .
Next I somehow stretached to buy a mattress for 500 $ . Sleeping on it for last 09 years and still going strongly .

You have to be really rich to buy cheap things .

TK you are the biggest plague I know and thank god you are not in my beloved Canada anymore and unfortunately India has to suffer.
Lalitha please do not listen to anything that TK suggests, he gets so much pleasure out of others misery, sadistic!! You don’t need to get stuff from garbage, you can get slightly used if you want. But they are enough stores that are modest in prices and just have to shop around.
I agree with GK Taurs, don’t get into the habit of putting you self-down or listening to people who don’t even live here anymore and just cowardly bash this place from elsewhere

GKT,
I also would agree with Fido. Canada is not a country paved with Gold. EVen here people have to struggle.
Lalitha has already indicated that only one person in their house hold is working and that she want to spend wisely. Hence the advice given.
As Fido said, first start with second hand basics. Then replace with new items and throw the old ones to trash or sell to new immigrants through Kijiji.

As a new immigrant, the following is very essential.

1. Dining table with chairs. Will convert into a work table also.
2. Lap top with good internet connection.
3. A PCS (print copy scan) printer.
4. Nearest food bank / IKEA
5. Cellphone for hubby and wife.
6. Tv on a TV stand. Video / VCD/DVD player.
7. A standby baby sitter who can baby site for a few hours when needed.

People like GK Taurus are a plauge to CD (sorry for the harsh words) but they will try to mislead CD's to spend more and lead a good life where as if you see them, they will be misers in real life, using food bank and exploiting people.

A good story is that of Chandresh who did not want to change his name to Charles and stay here in Canada. He said that he is taking a flight out the coming week, but he is still in Canada. As Iknow his story, I know his lie. What if people actually thought that Canadresh lefy Canada, since cananda was not good.

Always, we need to know the person's character before we belive them.

Peace

For winter clothing & boots , please try out Sears Outlet ... you should get decent jackets & shoes in $50 - $60 each ...

Or you can go to Holt Renfrew or any other store and choose buying a $400/- jacket .... Both will serve the same purpose ...

I have used the former in harshest Candian winter and it has served its purpose well ....

We brought a toy @ Toys r us recently for $30/- and the very same was available @ Walmart for $16/- ... That s why I say ...look around ...

A new immigrant who is not earning 6 figures should start frugally and then scale up gradually as per his needs and not start living lavishly from the beginning or else we have had a case on CD where a person burnt himself out when he lost his job and went into depression.

Its your choice and its your money ...Living lavishly or frugally does not make one a millionaire - both are independent things ... what you earn is based on your skills and what you spend is your choice ....

I hope both Fido and gktaurus don't escalate each other's messages. I believe, the spirit of the message was lost.

Fido, I 100% agree one doesn't have to splurge to flaunt what they may not have, resulting in irresponsible spending.

Having said that, I believe gk's message was not meant to promote reckless lavishness, instead fine tune the mind set that promotes aspiration and not some low life living.
