Hello,
I am a dentist from India. I landed 2 years ago in Toronto and have been trying to qualify to practice dentistry. Now i passed all the exams and is planning to settle in Vancouver. After landing i went back and just used to travel to Canada for the qualifying exams. I would like to know
1, How to change my addresses in Pr card and driving license to BC. Is it necessary that i hold driving license for 2 years to convert it into BC license?
2, What is the best cellphone plan for a newcomer in BC?
3, What are the options to buy a medium sized sedan
4, I have 2 kids aged 6 and 4. I am not claiming any child care. Is it possible to claim the same and around how much money will that be in BC?
5, What will be a nice location to live in Vancouver. I will be based in UBC.
Thank you
1. For change of address to your PR, contact CIC (www.cic.gc.ca). I think you should be able to do this online.
2. Driving License: You need to walk-in to any of the ICBC (Insurance Corp. of BC) locations for this. They will also let you know about the conversion from ON to BC and what level you'd fall. Make sure you obtain the current and official driving record/abstract from Ontario as well as the insurance history from your current Insurance provider from ON.
3. I use Chatr - unlimited incoming and outgoing within the zone that covers from North Vancouver to the Surrey/Langley border. I don't have data and pay only $20/month for voice calls. This doesn't include voice mail. I found it cheapest. Check online for other carriers as well. Never had any complaints with Chatr. Mobilicity is offering unlimited talk/text/data for $30.
4. Sedan - Use Craigslist or based upon your budget walk-in to any Authorized dealership. Never buy it from no-name dealerships.
5. Child care is based upon your last taxable income. Contact 'Service Canada' or 'Revenue Canada' for more information.
6. These neighborhoods are good and have a close proximity when it comes to the transit routes to UBC:
- Metrotown, Burnaby (Mostly condos, something like Square 1)
- Brentwood Mall, Burnaby (Condos)
- Joyce/Collingwood, Vancouver
- South Vancouver - Near Fraser, Main, Knight Streets
- Vancouver WestEnd - Affluent but easy access to UBC. Infact, technically UBC is in West-end.
- Vancouver Downtown.
- Boundary Road (Vancouver/Burnaby Boundary)
- Richmond.
- More closer you are to the Skytrain station, better will be the commute to UBC. If your aim is to stay on rent for now, try living on a walking distance to the Skytrain station. Traffic is mess in Vancouver during rush hours. Try imagining 401 on Vancouver roads. We also don't have a sea of highways, just three 91, 99, and 1.
