Hello All
I need to go to India in last week of Feb for my brother's marriage.
My Indian Passport Expired 4 weeks ago and just a day before it expired i gave my citizenship exam (which i passed).
I was not given oath date as they wanted to cross check one of my USA visit so the lady told me that i will get letter at my place in appx 2 weeks which i have not got yet.
She told me my oath will most probably be held in Jan or Feb. (At that time i dint knew that marriage date will be fixed in first week of March).
So now comes the dilemma.
1- Should i renew my Indian Passport. Will they consider marriage as "emergency case"; as i have heard that they only count "extreme medical condition" as emergency.
2- Should i wait for Canadian Oath and then apply for Canadian Passport, if yes
a. how long will it take after oath to get canadian passport
b. how long it will take to get indian visa
Please guide/suggest me the best way to make it by end of february.
Any and all replies will be appreciated
Thank you

After Oath ... it takes 3 business days to get your citizenship status updated in the system. Hence you can apply on 4th day after taking the oath. You can get Canadian passport by next day ... if you show the reason and PAY MORE.
For Indian visa, it will be a week ( 4 to 5 business days)
Get your Indian Passport renewed to be on the safer side . I have seen cases where oaths have come an year later in regular course .. You have time right now to renew your Indian Passport .

Fido.
Apply for PP renewal (you will get pp within 15 days) and pray that you get oath date after India trip. If not, request CIC to post pone your oath.
Once you become Canadian Citizen you need to :
1. Apply for CPP
2. Surrender IPP – traveling without this is subject to penalties. Minimum penalty amt is $180
3. Apply for Visa
It is unrealistic to assume that all can be done within approx. 30 working days.
Recently, I have observed that CIC is issuing oath letter within 3 weeks of exam. In my case, I got the oath letter on the same day for oath in the next week. This was in December 2013.
If you miss the first oath date , the 2nd date is scheduled automatically ..Happened to me .. was in India when the oath ceremony letter came , missed it , the next date was scheduled automatically .
Just to clarify the above post , after getting a Canadian Passport , getting an Indian Visa may take 1-2 weeks .... There are no penalties for not getting your Indian Passport cancelled till 3 years , as long as you do not use the same for travel.
