i..........rock........!!!!!
Sikhs have been doing it since time immemorial, and also since they first landed their foot here. If someone really want a free food, go to the nearby Gurudwara lunger and you will feed well, that too a quality food. Unless, of-course you don't have any religious bindings. If you want to eat there every day, make sure you perform some voluntary service (seva) too.
You can check out Dixie Gurughar and the one in Rexdale (on highway 27). Two that I know of, and visited frequently.

Though TK intentions are noble, anything on subsidy especially food for the poor, will have to run the gauntlet of the capitalist policy makers.
One of my relatives, a thorough bred capitalist the other day was rueing about work being given to the poor in rural areas. He says 'all of them have started wearing pant and shirt, hardly anyone available for work in cities'. These people want the rural work force to starve, migrate to cities, live in squalor and do 12 to 18 hour shifts for them to roll in wealth. Sheer exploitation. They are also gunning against subsidy PDS of food grains. Only if people starve for food and are insecure these exploiters would have a reservoir and steady supply of cheap labour.
Hope and pray TK's initiatives see light of the day.

Preparing food for yourself and looking for a job is not a huge chore in itself. There are strategies that you can adapt to do both and feed yourself well. Been there done that. I always had a time to cook for myself while I was out doing odd jobs (Tim) and looking for a quality IT job. And mind it, I didn't come here with $10,000 in my pocket 10 years ago as majority of skilled immigrants these days. My pockets were virtually empty.
Again beg to disagree.
While in Canada, the majority of my time was spent on cooking for me and for the other 3 people who were with me. I used to make rice and chicken stew everyday. Then comes washing the plates of everyone. After that I was totally tired and prefered to laze instead of networking. You can ask, why cook for the other 3. In fact, none of them wanted to cook and so as I was in the same house (sharing) i had to cook for them.
Anyways, even otherwise, to cook a healthy meal, you need to spend atleast 1 hour. An hour in Canada is $ 11+. It would have been much better I could eat something outside for $ 5 or even $ 10. I remember while working at factoires (which takes the energy out of you in just 2 hours), we had breaks in which I ate Beef patty and drank Hot chocolate from the vendor who comes to the factory to see.
if you have a unworking spouse, then it is OK. but if it is one or 2 people looking for a full time job, we need a Amma canteen in Canada.

I am a Gents and not a Ladies.
TK - here, I agree with you as well as empathize. I was single so didn't have to spend much time on cooking per se.
Where I don't agree is, for the Govt. to open such facilities for the people who immigrate to this country with AT LEAST $10,000 in their pockets with the ability to at least work somewhere on the minimum wage while they are transitioning to the employment in their field. For poor, destitute, and the ones that are working poor with no savings, there exist soup kitchens and other such facilities already.
I repeat, nobody is forcing the potential immigrants to uproot themselves from their current situation and come offshore. In this day and age of information overload and Internet, if one can't do their homework then it's none of the Govt's fault. Life is tough here and everywhere for the middle class anyway. Research, research, research, and make a well planned strategy before you move. If you're a professional in India, making 6 figure salary per month, it's not a tough job these days to visit the country where you're planning to move. Sorry, but these are my opinions. What I commend about you is that you took a plunge and a step to move back when nothing was going right for you here. We should never hesitate to take such decisions in contingency. Life's too short to keep cribbing about it and do nothing.
Is it really government's business to serve cooked food?
Amma even provides free mixer and grinder with her photo pasted on it.
She also provides free rice, sugar, and cash on Pongal, etc. It is irresponsible spending of income generated from various sources by government for purely political gains. Please keep such ideas in India and do not export it.
