I see so many posts on this topic that I'm making this LANDING CHECKLIST to all newcomers....if I missed something please add it to this thread.

1) Passport with visa stamped. (One for each accompanying family member)

2) IMM travel document (one for each accompanying family member - do not sign it as this is done in the
Presence of a immigration officer on arrival).

3) Crucial documents like birth certificate, driving license. If you have a gulf license and have no accident-claim history then get a letter from the insurer stating the same. Chances are that you’ll getter a better motor-insurance deal in Canada. Get any other documents which you think are important e.g. medical history records, certifications, accolades etc. (make sure keep a spare copy at home).

4) Landing Money-check http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/skilled/qual-4.html to find the exact figure (get at least 30-40 % cash or traveler checks rest in draft or bank statement).

5) Do not get any meat or dairy products (especially if you’re migrating from the Asian subcontinent). Senior CDs please verify this. I’ve heard they even remark it on your passport.

6) Written list of all the items in your accompanying luggage and cargo luggage (due to arrive later). Make sure all expensive items like jewelry are included.

7) If you are getting any electronics, see that they support dual voltage (110-240). All major brands of electronics are available in Canada. However if you already have some (e.g. electronic shaver etc) and would not like to buy new then you can get them but you’ll need a step-up adapter.

8) If you are arriving in winter make sure you have warm clothes (2 sets at least).

9) Crucial medications if any. If possible get a copy of the prescription as well (just to be on the safer side).

10) Health insurance coverage for initial 3 months. This is not mandatory however recommend. This coverage can be bought from international insurance companies like AIG, American Life Insurance Co. 11) Lastly and very important – POSITIVE ATTITUDE & WILLINGNESS TO ADAPT

you have done us a great favour! We would be landing in Toronto in April 2005. Currently, we are in Tanzania.

I would appreciate your advice on what household items (especially kitchen) should we carry and which should buy from there. No point carrying unnecessary burden.

Hi. I need some clarifications about:

1. Point number 6 mentioned by erebello above about list of items. In my case, me and my wife are planning to fly from LA to Toronto. We will only bring along essentials like clothes, etc. We are selling our large items like furniture etc. For other smaller things like electronics, kitchen utensils etc, we were thinking of sending them through UPS/Fedex to us in Canada.
Now about the list of items, how does it fit into the picture. I mean, who do i hand the list to? At the airport at the time of landing, or to UPS/Fedex at the time of shipping?

2. My second question is about the Proof of funds. For 2 of us, I need to bring at least CAD$ 11,775. How much cash can I bring in by the rules? Does it have to be converted to CAD $ before I enter canada? If I bring Travellers Checks, do they have to be in CAD$ or is US Dollar ok too?

I will appreciate all your good advice in this matter.

1. Health insurance coverage depends on the province you are coming to. Provinces like Alberta give you coverage from the first day. So you need not waste money on health coverage.

2. Submit the list of items to the customs & immigration dept. at airport for things to follow.

3. Regarding warm clothes, it depends on where you are coming from. It is better to buy your warm clothes after coming here. Ofcourse bring one set of warm clothes, preferably jackets. Bring a good quality winter cap & gloves to take care of the initial phase. You will have to buy winter clothes from here.

Do not waste too much money on thermal wear. Would recommend thermal inner pants. You can wear a T-shirt inside the shirt & if you have a good jacket then you don't need to wear a thermal vest unless you are likely to be working outside in the cold.

Don't bring too many shawls etc. as you don't really get to use them.

4. For electronic products, I would suggest bringing a Indian style mixer which can work in Canada. They are available in certain places here but are costly.

Thanks for the landing checklist. I plan to land sometime next month - my questions are:

1. Bank Draft - Can I take an Indian Rupee (INR) bank draft or does it need to be in CAD?

2. You mention that we can show part of the money in bank statement. Can I take the latest bank statement from my local bank/transaction slip from an ATM which is closest to the landing date?
