Yes we did come here. But tell me something, and pls be honest here :)
You cam here to give yourself and your family a better life. In other words 1$=34 INR was one of the main reasons why you came here ?
Now you were earning X$ in India (i.e., X * 34 INR) in India. Dont you want to earn at least more than X$ in Canada ?
In other words ( :) ), you came here looking for a better life, an equally satisfying if not better PAYINg job than you had in India ?
If thats the case, whats wrong in reviving your degree, that you may earned with hard work and dedication ?
I support adjustment in the multicultural society of Canada, but why should you (or any new skilled immigrant) be relegated to bottom of the ladder ?

O_Nerd.....

No I didnt migrate with a calculator (if thats what you mean!). $1=INR 34 was not at all on my mind when I took this decision. I came here because of the fact that whats luxury in India is a norm here. You can provide everything ( if you are financially savvy)to your family even if you work at the bottom of the ladder. There is no such thing as 'small job' here. Every hardworking person is respected here. And no, theres nothing wrong in reviving your old degree , just be wise enough to calculate the time and resources you wanna spend again on it...since there is no guarantee that you WILL find the job for which you paid and studied so hard again. Moreover, you dont HAVE to study again just to avoid being at the bottom of the ladder....have confidence in urself with or without a degree.

Well lets assume , for face value that you did not "come here with a calculator" (Jai Lakshmi :D ) ..
Now let us assume you want to work here, in a "small job".. How small is small you have not mentioned. You (seem to) have good communication skills. So you have passed the first stage. You are (like most of us, including yours truly) a brownie.. Thats a turn off for a "bigger job" (read management level). So in essence you have to settle for a "beech wala" job ( i.e.,) something that is paying you "well enough" to lead a "happy" life. Please note that I have used quotations, as these are all relative terms.

Earlier in this post, you indicated that you have kids. You also drive a Car, a home (rent etc.,) , misc stuff ( groceries, entertainment and the usual stuff). Now let us assume that you , without doing any courses/skill tests, are able to get a job ( for that ).. May I ask what kind of job you are looking for ? and also how much do you expect to make ? and how much can you actually save for your self/family ?

I hear that phrase "dignity of labour" all around here. It is true. Had I not been an engineer, I would have probably been a Barber. Its so cool to be a Barber here. Heck my Barber has a nice cute house right on downtown. BUt being of a Desi mentality, do you think that we can faithfully be Barbers ?
I am making a presumption that you were quite well off in India and holding a high position in a company ! How would you feel if you had to take up a job as a Walmart clerk or a Tim Horton's cashier ? That too after hearing this statement from a duffer/dufferess at a HR desk "Sorry, you dont have the required skill set" etc. This after working so high up the ladder in India :)

That is true in the real world and also the world promised by CIC to all new "Bakras and Bakris"... However in the real world it is not true. Why ? Well the testimonials ( or as optimists like to call them "the negative rantings";) of many CD's speak for themselves !

But, if you feel you can do it .. Good luck in your endeavoursfrom me and for the rest of us here ( Hope I can speak for the rest of you guys here :D) :)

we digressed from main topic.
Just to restate>.. Canada may be good for your kid.. many such stories r there .
Secnd Microbiology is definitely.. as it is much easier to get a techy job here rather than HR job since a white collar job like that with not much of a technical input.
pharma co may listen to u esp. if u do some course here (max. one year.) reg. affairs etc .
do some co-op, summer training on the job ..
