I can give you the oldest one in the book. Read. Have a dictionary and a thesaurus handy and when you don't understand something, take time out to look it up. You could read on whatever subject you want, whatever interests you.

Once you do look something new up, try to create your own sentences with it. Try to use the word/phrase in general conversation with others. It'll eventually became a permanent part of your vocabulary.

Another practice I had followed long back when I was a student and which improved my english to a great extent (not that I write good english today, but it is definitely better than what I used to):

Every day, pick up 5 new words, write them down on a piece of paper with their meanings, and if possible, a sentence in which each of them is used and carry the paper in your pocket. Whenever you get time during the day, look at that piece of paper and try to repeat those words and sentence usage in your mind. You will discover that within a month, you would have added atleast 50 new words to your vocabulory.

Please join then library. You might aswell make the best use of your tax dollars and there is nothing(IMO) better than learning from the wisdom of others :). I rarely buy a book. The library deadline(inspite of renewal option) forces me to finish the book.

Your English will gradually improve while in Canada. I am not sure How long you have been here, But speaking to people (and among yourselves/family) in English will help you a lot. I guess you are already doing that. Once you speak fluently you will be able to express yourself clearly when writing and understand clearly when reading.

Where I went to school We had students from all over India and the only way to communicate effectively was through English. I was fine then. After that I wetn to university where most of my newer friends were all from Non English medium schools. I almost forgot spoken English. Of course i am not judging them, they were and still are friends. They could write ok and read English just fine. Then I moved out and things changed again in Delhi where most of the time in offices I heard and spoke English. Then I moved abroad to US and now I have forgotten to speak my own language. No Kidding, I cant complete full sentences in hindi without turning to English.

But as I have stated in another thread, IMO, The knowledge of good English is overrated. Other hard skills (and even soft) will count more.

All IMHO, of course.

visit CD on regular basis. Try to get involved in discussions. Try to put across your views. Take bashing in good spirit and try to reconstruct your sentences in the same manners as you read here. 1/2 An hour a day visit to CD will help you great length in improving your english plus fun comes as bonus!!
