Canada, on the other hand, needs a US-style system where residency is based on employment.
If Canada does not, or cannot, do that, then they should modify their selection criteria to give more weigtage to those occupations that are in demand and less weight to those occupations that are not in demand.

Dear Friend,
First Canada has to start recognising your foreign skills and education without that, how can they cross the barrier of accepting you as a professional and sponsor on work visa. So they have a long way to go US way.

Agree with the first part of the sentence. First time I've heard about the Canadian brain-drain hence immigration theory. Could you elaborate, possibly with some links?

If Canada needs people what do they need it for? If you answer that quesion then the next question is what do they Skilled People for. The economy which is growing is not doing so where highly skilled people are needed.

I hope you agree that there is a brain drain.

Numerous links can be had by Just searching Yahoo or google for the words "Canada + Brain Drain".

Jeez. Do you mean all immigrants are poor innocent victims of the grand conspiracy and their getting a job entirely depends on a Canadian leaving his/her job?

No, why do you think everything has to be a consipiracy? Can you take something at face value?

Quote:

Maybe. But remember, we're talking about two VERY different economies here. What works for the U.S. may not necessarily work for Canada.

The idea of Work permit should work in a similar way anywhere in the world.
If you need two people to harvest weed, and dont have any, you get them.
If you need two people to work on the space shuttle, and dont have them, you get them.

On a work permit. It has nothing to do with the type of economy or nature of work. Exact one to one Match between a Job and candidate.

Quote:

Secondly, the reason I came to Canada was because I never wanted this hassle of getting exploited by my employer because he held the keys to my greencard. Canadian immigration was a big relief as compared to the constant stress of being on a temporary H-1 where so much depended on your employer.

True in a lot of cases. In my case I had a very smooth time with my employer. was never on Bench and got paid regularly and employer was ready to do GC any which way I wanted.

Quote:

The work-permit concept in Canada does exist and lot of people are here on permits. Maybe the govt. should promote it more than immigration, there's some merit to the thought.

Which makes the situation even more questionable. I know there is a program to get doctors. What about the doctors already here?

I am sure in other fields there is a similar problem...i.e. The govt issuing permits for profession for which a supply of people already exists.

Quote:

Realistically speaking though, how many people here think that this change is going to come about soon?

That not the question......going by that you would be underestimating CD's contribution as just a place for irrelevant immigration chit chat.....which it is not.

Of course the skileld category thing has dug itself in so much that changing it or even altering it will invite more trouble than it may solve.

I once made a mistake, but I was wrong about it.

Since my name is on this list, could you please show me when I've called people "whiners" and written "against" them?

Did I say you have "written" against the "whiners"? That you are "against" them is the impression one gets from the stand you take on this board. Now please do not ask me to elaborate on this either.

I can show you several posts of mine where I've said that there IS a genuine issue here and the govt. needs to do something. All I've protested is the way the issues are presented and exaggerated.

And can you please let me know WHERE they have been presented in a wrong manner or exagerrated?? Individuals who have come here and have not been successful have let off steam against the Canadian system of immigration and the Canadian Government. They have been harsh and condemned the whole business in unequivocal terms. Where is the exagerration in that, if you too agree that "there IS a genuine issue here and the govt. needs to do something'? Because you are safely ensconced in your job, does not take away their privilege to spew anger at the system that has been largely responsible to have brought them in the state they are in? Why are you against it, when you agree that they are right? What is so wrong if their style of expression is not as soft and different from yours??

Can you tell me how this stuff helps anybody???

Did I make any claim that it was supposed to help anybody? Are ALL posts on this board written ONLY to help somebody?? Am I forbidden to ONLY write WIHOUT wanting to help??

You talk big, however that's pretty much all I've seen. When are you actually planning to DO something?

What have YOU done on this board, until now that has helped someone and how? Or for that matter, who on this whole board has done anything VIA this board that has helped anyone and how?? Any examples of "help" on this board, other than posts from people that have provided "information" and "answers" to issues and questions raised? To that end, I too have tried and contributed whatever little I could.

Or do you think your rants will bring about a dramatic change in Canada's immigration policies?

If you call what I have written a "rant" then, yes! Maybe!Because it is rants like these only, and when they increase in numbers and strength, that quite often do end up forcing the governement to change policies.

Really. All this "govt. should do this and govt. should do that" sounds so vacant , man. Why don't you get off the mic. and actually start doing something?

What do you want me to do? Please advise!

Cause it can lead to endless debates from those who are hurt by those labels. Ultimately leading to ego battles rather than debate's of substance.
e.g: 'whiner' by me OR 'clowns','fools', etc by others .

Could you please give me some examples of "debates of substance' as against "ego battles" that we've had on this board? Having done that, would you mind educating me on some the finer points observed by your analytical mind that made the two types of arguments so different and helped you classify some into debates of "substance" and others into "ego battles"?

huh??? So now we're talking impressions now. :D That's great, make statements about people and then back it up with "impressions". So I'm sure you'll be very agreeable when people make statements about you based on their impressions, right?

Instead of having me dig up old posts, since you're the one who started saying that I'm against whiners, why don't YOU dig up some isntances where I've protested in the wrong manner? Do the work yourself.

Aboslutely. I'm glad you agree that your post didn't do squat. And if you think your chorus of rants here will change govt. policy, you better wake up and smell the coffee. A lot of publications (including the TO Star) have printed a LOT of articles on immigrant woes here. They've done little to shape govt. policy so far, exactly what makes you think that the govt. will modify policies based on your inputs on CanadianDesi?

Heh!! :D. How long will this take? And say it takes another 4/5 years, what about the people who're already here within that time? What plan do you have to help them, more rants??

May be better than sounding like a broken record in every other thread because you don't agree with the Success Stories in Canada.

Angry? Me? Not at all, man. I'm cool. I don't even feel "ambushed". :D
