okay, I see this thread evolving in another direction too, where this thread has potential to serve the puporse of networking, as well as readymade resource for potential employers (hope they visit CD too) :)

So as per Sudesingh's msg, I am just trying to make a template kind of thing, so that newcomers can keep on updating their info in that format. Oldies are welcome to update their info anyway

Towards this, here is the evolving template:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Education:
IT Experience:
Business Domain:
Technology Domain:
Area of Specialization:
Current Employer:
Did you study further in Canada to get a job:
Your perception of IT career growth in Canada:
To get a job in Canada, what matters the most:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sude, what do you think about above template? Any input from learned members on this forum are welcomed

Good Job ThinkingOne. I hope your efforts pay off.

Should we include a salary range (not salary), or would that be stretching too much. On one hand it will give new comers an idea of what to expect, but on the other they may start having high or unrealistic expectations.

Thinking One, SS

Thats great task you have initiated. This will really help in Networking and be a ready made resources for potential employer.

I think we can add one more row as secondory skills, besides primary skills. This is in case some one is laid off or new comer looking for Job and not able to manage to get into primary skills he can opt for secondary skills.

Its just my thought, If you all feel OK than we can include this as well.

Thanks

Sharma

Dear IT professionals:

I am a life sciences graduate from New Delhi, got my PR, planning to land in canada soon. Getting certification in my field will be tough over there.
:) Is there any software skills on high demand in Canada? If I learn that now before migrating, will that help me get into the mainstream IT field ? Once I study a diploma course in IT over there, will I be recognized as a fresh IT professional though I am from non-IT background ?
I am seeking your valuable suggestion and guidance. Which course can I study in India? Looking forward to hear tips fom everybody.

ram_saravan,

Canadian work experience is given good deal of importance here. So I guess, even if you do some one year course here, with a Co-op program, you are getting into the field automatically. Experienced members may correct me if they feel otherwise.

Regards.

My views - Doing a 1-yr course with a Co-op is good. Getting a job in the same field is a debatable question. In the last 10 yrs I've seen both sides of the coin.

Personally I know of someone who did a course in PowerBuilder (Yes !) & Oracle in 1995 just before landing. In about 6 weeks he got his 1st breakthru - a PowerBuilder developer with Anderson (now Accenture), with almost nil experience. But I think he did well in the interview. OTOH I've seen experienced IT professional, finding it difficult to get a break even after years of experience, but when it clicks they hit a jackpot.

Take it with a pinch of salt. Don't get demoralized. Think positive & act accordingly.

I think the key here is soft skills - confidence (is it really a soft skill ?) As long as you can prove yourself in the interview, doesn't matter wether you have the experience or not.

For those in Toronto - on the morning radio (AM 530) from 8am to 10am, the Indian programme Punjabi Lehran by Purnima is something a must hear. She's a counsellor (by profession) & talks on such topics almost everyday. BTW I'm not trying to market the programme, it's just that sometimes I enjoy what she says, and it's so true.

Tip for potential candidates - I once interviewed a developer. The Q I asked him - On a scale of 1 to 10 where 1 is low & 10 is high, how do you rate your Java skills. The answer - 8 + 2. 8 being my knowledge of the language, and 2 I'll use the help files to find my way. Result - he got the job. Indeed he proved himself on the job.
