How many companies would actually recruit people without physically being in Canada? Many companies infact do not recruit you unless you have Social Insurance number. Even on websites, you are asked if you are legally entitled to work in Canada i.e you are a citizen, permanent resident or have a work permit.

I have heard telephonic interviews being conducted by U.S. companies for people in India but not Canadian companies.

So asking people to line up interviews or get a job offer before coming ot Canada, I am not sure if it is the right thing to do.

I guess people are prepared to struggle for the initial 6-12 months, do odd jobs but after that, when we don't get jobs of our liking & suiting our skills & experience, we start getting frustrated & that is when it becomes more difficult.

Canadian Desi provides a good outlet for people to vent out their feelings especially when you are alone & don't have family & friends to share your feelings with.

2 of my close friends here are doing quite well here. One of them was a medical lab technologist in India who was hardly making ends meet. After coming here, he had a heart attack on the 10th day of landing here at the age of 34 & almost died. He then got a job in a leading hospital in Calgary in his field & is earning around 4000 dollars per month. Within 6 months, he had paid off all money he had borrowed to come to Canada, had a car & other comforts.

Another is a engineer who had to struggle a lot. Worked in security jobs, shovelled snow in winter, made icecream in a factory. His wife, however, got a good engineering job once they moved to Calgary from Toronto. My friend after struggling for 2 years, finally got a good job in engineering at Fort McMurray & is earning more than 10000 dollars a month.

It is also not certain that if you move out of GTA area then you can definitely get a good job. I know of people here in Calgary also who are engineers & not able to get jobs in their field.

In my job also, I have people who have couple of years experience & yet are senior to me whereas I have around 14 years sales experience.

Thanks.

The problem when you 'vent' your frustration is that you have new immigrants reading it. They go from one extreme (hoping for the best in Canada) to the other (starting to 'assume' that there is absolutely NO professional work in Canada). What follows is that the person gets into a dead end job (because it seems so acceptable - people on Canadiandesi sometimes say 70% of professionals work menially, sometimes they say its 60%, sometimes its 99%, sometimes its ........). Next thing you know, there's another person to b*tch on the board.

So before you 'vent' your frustration, try taking a step back and figure out whether what you are posting is actually reasonable.......

What statistics do you have at your workplace?

I did not find any figures from your workplace reading above thread.
Why you dont want to tell figures from your workplace?

I can't see what 'statistics from my employers' can be relevant - they don't bring immigrants into Canada so there's no percentage I can throw around (like 90%, 70% 60%) that you guys do.

What could be relevant however, is that the company (which today has annual revenues and market capitalization, each of several billion dollars) was set up by a first generation immigrant (not south asian) a few decades ago. Oh and just in case you are wondering, the immigrant who set up the company was not illiterate.

In terms of the company's current management, there's an Indian who's on the board (he may not be a first generation immigrant), another in 'very senior operations management' who is first generation and a fair sprinkling of first-gen immigrants in middle management. This is not necessarily something that is atypical of the corporate environment in Toronto.

My views are also influenced by extensive dealings with external consultants where I meet literally dozens of first generation immigrants -from Indians, Brits, to Germans and a range of other nationalities, so I'm quite aware that neither are there NO jobs for immigrants nor is it IMPOSSIBLE for an immigrant to find professional work.
