Hi all,
Me and my husband will be soon coming to canada (ontario). We have been looking for accommodations through various sites and since it's going to be our first time there we would rather start by a rental place. While brushing through the add's I've seen that most of them which lie in our money bracket are unfurnished, it's completely empty! So does it mean that new comers here HAVE to first spend all that cash on things like furniture, fridge and other utilities???
The things is we are based in UK ( plz don't ask why are we leaving UK?! 
) And here the housing is completly diffrent we get fully furnished homes quite easily providing even tiny detalis like tea towles! and in a much reasonable amount...atleast that has been our experince so far.
Does anyone here knows any sites which provide homes which are rather furnished with basics if not everything and not toooo costly? and also how are basement rooms to live in? Do they have enough ventilation? Don't mean to be quite fussy, but it's always good to look thorugh each and every aspect speacially in an alien country and what better place to ask questions like these than here!

Unfurnished apartments in apartment buildings - only contain fridge & stove (cooking range). The clothes washer & dryer are in a common room in the building. They are pay-per-use. These are mostly owned by a rental company. Some units/buildings may contain a dish washer.
Apartments in condo buildings - contain fridge & stove (cooking range). The clothes washer & dryer is either included in the unit or in a common room in the building. They are pay-per-use. These are owned by individuals. Some may be furnished. Some units/buildings may contain a dish washer.
What's the difference between a apartment build & a condo building. Apt buildings are woned by a rental co. where as in a condo building each unit is owned by an individual who may be living there or may prefer to rent it out.
Basements - A basement apartment in someone's house. Some may be furnished. Even if they are unfurnished you'd atleast get a fridge & stove. The washer & dryer are shared with the landlord.
Most places the rent includes use of utilities - heat, hydro (electricity), water. You would however find some place that provide even the tiniest bit like tea towels. It's more like a guest house (a detached house with individual rooms rented out). The rent for these will be significantly higher than the ones stated above.
When you say costly, what is the budget you're looking at.
Basements - I've seen both kinds - stuffy & congested and airy & bright.

Thank you for your response, it did give us a basic idea. I guess it's just a matter of looking around at hundreds till you come across a handful of choices which might suit your expectations. Right...so if I do get a place which is not fully furnished and I need to buy some furniture is it easy to get brand new or even second hand furniture and at what price range can one get it. The other thing that I have come across in many postings are the high taxes, how does the tax system work there? And is there a tax on each and everything?

That's right...look around !!!
Furniture - Tons of places around. You finds tons of Desi stores especially in Mississauga. It's a matter of walking in and walking out with the right kind of stuff. Again follow the rule....look around until you're satisfied.
Price Range - Hugh variation. You could get an entire set for as low as $500 or cud go upto $5000.
Taxes - Yes, technically we pay 15% tax, but hey, walk into a Desi store & strike a deal... all incl. price taxes & delivery... if not walk away.
As regards 2nd hand furniture, that will take some looking around. How do you find out about this ... well what people generally do is put up a flyer in the local grocery store or laundry room & you call them up and take it from there.

Keep in mind... location...location...location.
Where would you prefer to live (close to schools (if), work place, highway, public transit, desi community....)
Consider the travelling aspect especially in the winter months.

Also..a cash deal maybe an incentive to waive the 15% tax+lower cost , for a dealer. This works better with smaller biz than a big box store.
