I don't think these HRDC funded agencies are of any use. Only help is that you get to know few people who are in same boat as you and there advice regarding resume is more or less useless. That's good advice only for getting labor jobs or customer service. Most of the people coming from desi countries on independent category are well educated and the advice of these HRDC consultant is useless and most of these consultants also don't have much of the knowledge of engineering, etc. field. Yes, free internet, printing, faxing, etc. are helpful particularly when you are new in the country, but you don't need to attend any course for it and just registering is enough.

Just a practical experience of mine and others.

Are you coming to the Vancouver CD meeting? if so, I think we'll have fun debating the above post :) Since I work for a HRDC (Now called Service Canada) funded program - I am glad to get your feedback. We do work with professionals across many occupations.

Yes, I will be coming, but please finalise within next 2-3 days, so that all of us can firm up plan. I realise earlier also that some of the CDs are in HRDC. I had been to ISS & SUCCESS and talked to many people there and that's what my & some of my friends experience. Yes, some HRDC funded organisation(like one thing I like about SUCCESS and after that always recommended my friends to them) do some good things too, but in general for educated lot of desi's, it's useless in my personal opinion.

My wife attended the same program at Landell associates too, when we landed here last year. She found it quite useful with respect to resume preparation and interview skills.

However, she said that they discouraged posting resumes in websites, and put more emphasis on cold-calling, networking etc. But the job she got was actually by posting her resume on a company's website. So did I (by posting my resume in monster).
