That is a good post Worship. And I realised that Chandresh was asking to have some basic points nailed down for a reason.

The reason is simply this: Is touching your elders feet the only way to show respect? So in essence is touching feet Indian culture or is showing respect Indian culture? It would be a good idea to have posters define what is culture for them. I think you\\\\'ll find that some people think being religious is culture. Some may even think littering to be culture. (perish the thought).

And in the end, nailing down culture is difficult to do. It is a moving target. I bet your parents think that you have lost some culture even living in India! And your grandparents think the same about your parents. So culture is evolving.

Finally, I would like to make sure we understand one thing clearly. Fellow Canadians, be they black white brown yellow, do not lack culture! And it is niether wrong nor right, it is not better or worse than \\\\\\\"Indian Culture\\\\\\\". By saying that Indian culture is superior, we mean there are others with inferior culture. I refuse to accept that as a HUMAN BEING.

I'm sure that this post will not lay this debate to rest, although i dont think you could be any clearer.

......... And Shobha De/Protima Bedi are an exceptional socialites who do not represent India .

I, curious...who do you think amongst those that have given their views represent India in its 'true form'? Chandresh, Me(surprise me :)), Big V, Worship(nice post btw) or ONLY Sonusingh and Manasavi?
Also please elaborate if you mean urban india, middle class india, upperclass india, rural india etc.
Like Chandresh mentioned, everyone does not touch their elders feet. I grew up in Mumbai and amongst my friends(of all religions) I did not see anyone touch the feet of their elders(though i did, on TV). Granted...I may have mixed around with or been part of an 'uncultured' upringing :) .

Politeness and courtesy are largely missing from Indians as much as is a habit of being honest and doing things professionally .

So i guess those(politeness, courtesy, honesty and professionalism) are not part of Indian culture then? So some of these bigots in the west have been right all along?
I think I understand the need to simplify things by generalising. Maybe it does make sense. However, it can be double-edged as you can see above.

I'm not sure its any better to say that Indian culture is lacking in those attributes than overflowing and superior in others. According to me both are equally prejudiced and definitely not something I want to pass on to my kids.

One does not become culturally challenged because one kisses in public.

Quite acceptable - there s no superiority / inferiority involved - its just right and wrong . What may be right as per 1 culture may b wrong as per the other ? Eating non veg / beef is not my culture whereas
it is acceptable elsewhere - both are right ........... but the mindsets are different ................

I think the original poster wished 2 emphasise on - how to retain this distinct mindset in r children so as 2 judge right / wrong as per 'Indian culture (values)' & not a q of being superior . I wish ppl can provide suggestions for the same as well.

Aarey worship sahib,

Dash good post indeed on 30-11-2005.

Lakin out of curiosity, is touching peoples feet a sign of respect for them. In certain circles, touching people's feet is meaning transferring your sins to that person. Apla samaj me yeh bahut selfish act hai. Lakin anytime anybody wanting me to touching their feet, please letting me know, apun doing. That persons feel apun respecting him yaan her and in apla mind apun thinking'kya saalaa sucker hai, apla sins apne upar taking, bilkul yera'. Chal apun not thinking ke act of touching feet is Indian value, it is Indian tradition. The notion behind woh action is the value like u r tolding and others that it is showing respect. Other peoples in other kabilas thinking transferring sins and maybe still other peoples thinking something else.
Lakin not getting me wrong. Jhakas post hai!

Apun totalling agreeing, apla grandfather thinking apla father lost some values and he in turn thinking apun not having any Indian value.

Apun in other thread putting link showing ke in Gujarat Mandir is luring bachas by offering pizza, hot dogs and chinese food. Bol, u r thinking such thing mumkin 20-30 years ago? Even Temples using marketing.

And also many peoples from apla India coming here and finding Indian peoples here of 'pind' mentality. Like ekdum backward like from rural area of India. They are thinking that perhaps yeh log coming Canada changing lakin they becoming even more traditional than Indians in india who evolving and making more modern themselves.

Anyway, khali observations hai boss.
