For I am sure that most of the things you might say are Indian values will actually be Human values, good with any culture, race, country etc. etc. and they cannot be put only as Indian values. Yes, there are quite a few things which will be unique as Indian values, or traditions, but then the original poster and his supporters should first define (and be clear themselves)what THEY mean as Indian values.

If it is the definition which is bothering you, then please go ahead and assume that by Indian Values

May be it is just my respect towards the values which my parents have given to me, I named them Indian values, since me and my parents are Indian.

Point was not to initiate an argument on values. Point was to know about the efforts that we have made to ensure that atleast our children remain in touch with those values.

Mansvi very positively guided me on how I can keep my child associated with our values.

The people responding to this Thread are the typical first generation confused immigrants who have one foot in India and another in Canada.

Sonusingh,
I feel, if you can maintain a balance between your Indian cultural values and human values and follow the path, your children will automatically inculcate them in their moral fibre.
I mentioned' your Indian cultural values ' because they are values specific to your family and your upbringing - your cultural values.
My children touch the feet of my elders and I did not force them to do that. They saw me seeking bleesings and followed the same practice as they were too young at first to understand, however my daughter did question the practice as she grew up. Seems my answer appealed to her, for now she touches my granny's and other elders' feet cause she definitely feels the flow of blessings or good vibes.
However my friends of other faiths who do not follow this practice are not any less cultured or lacking in Indian values, cause it is not part of their upbringing or their cultural values. They have other ways of reflecting their cultural values.
Such discussions always centre around cultural values= INDIAN VALUES
IMO.....Human values are what matters the most for aren't they too are a part of our Indian values!?
For me it matters more that my children be good human beings. Cultural reflections do take a second place, for what use their following certain norms just to proclaim their cultural identity, whereas they disregard the basic human values?
It is a tough life for our kids as they are at real cross roads. It is for us parents, since we have taken the initiative to make Canada a home, to extract the essence of both the cultures and wisely make it a part of our and their lives.
And yes, I have met Canadians who have great human values and surprisingly great cultural values too! and hopefully I don't intend to sit on some pedestal and judge them. One does not become culturally challenged because one kisses in public.
Crux of the matter being GREAT communication and rapport with our kids so as to strengthen their respect for us and what we believe in and to cultivate an undenying faith in them, that whatever they do or whenever in life they need, we are always there and they can always come Home.
Too many words as its a topic I feel deeply about. However,I would like to read what you feel are Indian Values. I have yet to come across any parents, who are not bothered about the well being of their children.
