I don't understand "Also because of the pressure from my parents that only my wife is working and I am not…..you know how that it .."

You are married/educated it seems and donot understand how come parents come in this picture about making decision about your life and your future. Who is working, how much making money, What they/others thinking MAN this is their mind and life. why hell you are so much consious about other people thinking?

They are not "Other People", They are parents. Every Indian have great influence of parents in his/her life.

I have seem many people returning back to India just for parents. This is our tradition, this is our value, this is our strength.

I do not understand why this topic was under 'Success Stories' earlier? I have now moved it to life (and so now it is not locked as earlier it was)

Sorry guys I haven't been able to get the whole conversation as to what it all started about. But from the few postings I read I could figure out that it is about parents intrusion in our lives. We as indians still do believe that parents come next to god.
"Matru devo bhava, Pitru devo bhava."
Of course as times change they cannot cope with changing times and do command us because for them we still are children. Although we maybe grown-ups, educated & CULTURED, we cannot ignore them. If we talk of culture India is the only country which has the longest or the oldest surviving culture. If there are difference in opinions it is advisable to just listen to parents and educate them with the situation. Things can worsen only if we cross our so-called "Maryada" or respect when we hurt their feelings. We cannot imagine our kids doing things to us which we do to our parents. Kids learn from their parents. So let us give our parents their due respect. Hope I haven't said anything wrong.

.

my thoughts:

1) When one is married, their spouse comes first, no longer their parents wishes. If there is a conflict, one ought to take their spouses side always.

2) I dont believe that parents dont cope with changing times. Thats a generalization - many people are very resiliant and look forward to new things. I assume unless one's parents are very old.

3) India is ONE of the oldest civilizations/cultures in the world .. one of. China, Middle east(Iraq) and Australia also make that claim. From what I have read (took anthropology years ago)..Sumarian (Mesopotamia ) is one of the oldest societies - in what is now Iraq. So its all debatable..

Doesnt mean im any less proud of being an Indian..

Very well said on all three points....

I am a follower of your point 1. Consultations made between me and my spouse come before everything else. Decisions made by us are final although we do consider thoughts and ideas from each other's parents. This has helped us to be strongly independent and given us the ability to take ideas, filter them out, make the final decision and stand by that decision.

But again, it is all up to the individual. He or she can live with whatever suits him or her best.
