Hello to all Desis,
I have some questions.
1. How many of you are excited about the news of GOI deciding to give away Overseas Citizenship Of India (OCI), instead of duel citizenship?
2. Is this what you expected after such a long wait and all the news about duel citizenship?
3. How different is this from getting an Indian Visa stamped on your Canadian passport? In other words, if any one of you have applied, for what reason? Does this bring you any closer to your motherland than you already were?
4. What do you think are reasons for GOI offering OCI rather than duel citizenship?

Dual citizenship, in my opinion would have been possible only if BOTH countries have common political / security / business goals. I am not sure how many (developed) countries share India's views on international issues. The dual citizen would have been a wasted exercise IMO.
This is the closest we can get to dual citizenship.
Notionally, will have no difference whether its dual citizen or OCI. But there are practical difficulties when you visit with a VISA stamped instead of OCI or DC. Mainly being not required to report to the police station for longer stays, un restricted movement, ability to buy assests in India etc... OCI or DC lets us enjoy benefits of both countries. In the long run, as India progresses and as its VISA procedures become stringent, OCI will be handy, especially for 2nd / 3rd generation in the family.
OCI seems to be a modified form of PIO card, one with no expiry date.
(that does not apply to the card holder..

Does that means Pakistan has similar Political/Security/Business goals with Canada/US?
