I'm here with spouse on work permit.
I want to get spouse surname and marital status changed in the passport at Indian embassy in Canada. (I didn't have time while coming from India)

1. as proof, just original marriage certificate is enough or seal of Ministry of external affairs is required?

2. going in person is better, or sending by post?

3. surname change is done in the existing passport or a new one is issued?

and any other tips?

spouse name entry required for US visa: in future if we are going to apply for US visa, US visa requires one of the spouse names listed in the either of the passport.
second, getting passport for child requires this.

well, surname change may not be compulsory, just for consistency purposes: writing name with husband surname in unofficial occasions, writing with her own surname in official thisgs like opening bank account etc.

I had applied for my change of surname, and they had asked for a marriage certificate and a birth certificate aswell and a copy of the PR card .i've heard it is much quicker if you go in person, just fill out the form with the necessary documents and a twenty five $ cheque and they return it you by post.. it takes 30-45 days.

as for your 3rd question i still dont know.. but they didnt ask for my passport.

That menas:
will they return it to you immediately after making changes?
OR
after making changes, they will send it by post that takes 30-45 days?

I meant that its faster if u go in person and submit the relevant papers and then the processing takes a month or two and is returned to u by post.
