Make sure to check everything carefully, your cell phone plans, your Bell phone bills, your credit card statements etc..
Companies add on a lot of hidden unnecessary charges that add up. Don't be afraid to fight them!
Greetings Iana
I think it was a splendid idea putting up this thread ..are you compiling a final list at the end of it all (at least after the first spurt of tips)?
Here are a couple more tips from experience:
1) SHELTER:
a) Don't rent a place just because it is close to where you work or otherwise.
Please conduct (at the very least) some preliminary checks on the area /
bldg..personally pl. dont go anywhere near Thorncliffe - Overlea blvd Area
b) It makes sense to get an insurance for your place of stay even if you are
renting. It can do you good in case of any theft (Superpower forbid)
2) ASSETS:
If you are here with jewelry then please don't leave it in your apartment. A security deposit box at a bank is always recommended..we learnt it the hard way.
Thanks all for the wonderful tips!! Many were eye-openers.

One more... Don't be in a rush to buy a house when you move here. Even if you have the down payment available. Do your research, look around, explore different areas...etc.. My family knows a lot of people who got burnt.
all exp. is amazing with lots of information.
thanks all of you
Whenever you are talking with bank person, Insurance company or any money metter person. Please do not reply with hmmm..yeh.. yaah....yes...ok....etc.. that means you are agreed with whatever he told you on phone or personally.
in my cas oneday i got call from TD bank about my personal insurance, person on phone was speaking very fast in english. so in reply i just used hmmm or yaah. .. after 4 days i got my insurance policy from TD canada with premium of 258.00$ per month. than i spoke with customer care and i informed that i never requested any kind of insurance for me or my family. Why you send it to me? than they explained me and on my request cancelled my Insurance policy.
1. The biggest mistake we made was: We never bought a house offered to us by our neighbours at $340000 (2001) now the same house is fetching $700000. My wife was for it and I was against.......I still have to keep on listening to \"i told ya\"
2. Time wasted on stupid companies like primerica and wfo etc etc..
3. Time wasted on telephone surveys we were new and thought that we were helping and by the time you realise your 1 hour is gone...
4. Always plan plan plan in this country.....For Travel you plan ahead one year. in my country we just did it in a day. For picnics you plan ahead a month. For interviews you plan and practice for a week. Same with going to dentists, doctors, visiting friends. Any sort of applications eg job, college admission you plan plan...Oh what a life!....even for shopping you plan.. prices are vastly different from one shop to another... Even dining out you have to make reservations..
5. Always have coins change in your pocket and car. Once when parking at train station the parking had a meter lot I had no coins and nobody and believe me nobody would change my $ 5 bill. A shopkeeper just looked at me as if I was crazy....In my country many people will offer and help you to change a bill for you.
6. University education is nothing.....trades are looked highly upon

A real big mistake is to move to Canada
However take solace, there are bigger mistakes
