hi cds,
it has been a week since we landed here and we r gradually moving into that frame of mind. it has not been euphoria but neither has it been sadness. but wow it is quite chilly and so i dread to think what winter will be like. visited a ganesh temple today. felt so much at home. today was special coz they had an elaborate puja.

i wanted help from fellow cds to help pick up mobile phone, which plan to select, which company to select...

at the moment we will mostly use it receive calls and judiciously make occasional calls to India and US.

thanks in advance..

sidenote:i feel soo at home whenever i visit canadiandesi...ty cds...

Sunflower,
Welcome to Canada!
For mobile phone, i would prefer FIDO which is the cheapest one available. Go to their website and choose which one suits you best.
They have phone plans for as low as $ 40 per month +sys. fee+GST/PST which allows you free local calls 24/7.
see various options available in this Fido link -> http://www.fido.ca/portal/home/homepage.jsp?lang=en
Internet you have options such as 295.ca, 3 web (dial up) and Rogers lite (Cheapest High speed);
If you have any other queries, please feel free to ask the board.

Hey Welcome Aboard,

Yup FIDO is good
they have plan starting from $25 per month, however the bill comes around $44 per month including system access fee+GST+PST+caller ID
plan include -
unltd incoming
some nbr of calls free in GTA
free calls + SMS for first 6 months
.......

if u r going for 2 cell phones, one for u and one for ur wife, then i wud suggest
go for unltd incoming plan for 1 phone and unltd outgoing call in GTA for other phone
so that u can save max.

Just keep in mind most plans are either a 1/2/3 yr plan. What I've found (and no offence to you) about new immigrants from India is that the first thing they want is a cellfone. Fine, they get it and sign a contract, few months down the road they realize that they can actually do without one or just need a pay-as-you-go plan. Well at that point it's too late - 'cause now you have to pay a penalty to cancel.

These telecom companies entice you into signing a 2/3 year contract, on the pretext of giving you a free cellfone. Which may be true, but a year down the road you realize that you're paying too much, and the only way to walk away is to cancel the contract and pay the penalty.

Just a word of caution.....my 2 pennies

Yes, SS is right.
But there are a lot of shops selling second hand cell phones for as low as $50 and you can buy that and get a plan from Fido (other than pre paid) on a month to month basis without any contract.
One such shop is in Dundas-Hurontario intersection in mississauga.

Sidenote : Sorry SS. I posted it while rushing to the office and made the typo. I have edited my post. Sorry for any misunderstanding.-TK
