So the dried leaves are of no good use and my uncle has to continue drinking 'Karela' juice.

I have heard that Karela is also very good for diabetes. Yes, he can continue with the karela juice - it would be great if you can update us if it made any difference.

Yes he said Karela juice did make a difference. He went to India 5 month ago and got himself tested and fasting was 298 ( its 18 as per North American stndrd). this was first time it came that high .it used to be normal before he says.
He has since been doing this
Brisk walk+excercise
Yoga- Kapalbharti Asan
Sugarless Tea( no Substitute)
Whole wheat chapati
No rice at all
Following all dos and don't for diet as already discussed in this post

His current readings are 6.3 fasting and 8.5 afer meal.
No medication yet.Any suggestions of what he can do more. he is 52 years 6'1'' and weighs 200 pounds.

-- Just a minor correction - what you have mentioned is actually a european standard - mmol/litre, (and not a north american standard) adopted by Canada. In the US, they use the units similar to what we use in India i.e. mg/dl. Just as an FYI: To convert mmol/l of glucose to mg/dl, multiply by 18.

-- He should reduce weight - eat low GI food. If he is able to reduce his waistline, the sugar levels will be very good - less than 6.0mmol/litre (or below 110).

Hello,

Was just following this thread and had a few questions. The Doctor says it is necessary to go on pills (Metmorphin) if you have Type II diabetes. But I can see many friends who have written on this thread who have not yet started the pills.

Can someone please suggest if controlling the diet and excercising regularly could be enough in brining down sugar levels.

Also if once daigonosed with Type II diabetes, can a person ever come back to 'normal' in terms of not having diabetes. hoping someone can shed some light on these points.

Thanks
Sasha.

-- Just diagnosed with type-2 diabetes does not tell you if pills are good for you or just the diet. It depends on your glucose levels. Say if your fasting sugar is in 300s (like 16 - 18 as per the cdn std), you should listen to your dr. and then pills is the best option to start with. You can start following the strict diet/exercise and see how it is affecting your sugar levels and follow the dr's advice again, regarding reducing/eliminating the pills.

If your sugar levels is in the range of around 200 (11ish) then exercise diet is good to start with.

This is a forum only, therefore it is in your best interest to read a lot about the diabetes, follow strict diet and exercise accordingly - in addition to your dr's advice. You will benefit tremendously.

Thanks..... cdn_dude.

My fasting levels are normally between 7 - 9. So I do want to try with excercise+diet for a few weeks and then see if pills are required.

My other concern .... I applied for life insurance a few months ago when my fasting level was 19. The insurance company declined to cover me for life insurance. This was manulife. So does this mean I can never get life insurance now?
