Buying Laptop from USA?

Guys,
To add to the discussion.
I am in the market looking to buy a new lap top. My budget is US$ 500 or less (Incl. taxes). I am looking for a new one and I am looking to shop at Detroit, Michigan this coming weekend. OTOH, My P3 HP laptop is very slow. I would not mind giving it away to HP, if HP can take it and reduce the price for a new laptop.
I would appriciate if someone could recommend me the best configuration available model for the above mentioned rate.
When I was in New york for christmas, I saw a new laptop for $299 + taxes opposite the empire state building. But at that time I was not in a mood to buy a laptop and hence did not pay much attention to it.
My main activities on the laptop would be using 3D max (to be learnt. Used to render buildings), Autocad, web browsing and Voip.

3d max like any 3d package would benefit from extra RAM. Vista(which all laptops most come with) eats up a bit of ram. For good performance especially if you are rendering bulidings etc(which mean a lot of hi-res textures could be called from the ram etc)...I would recommend at least 3gb ram. Oh yeah you will also benefit if you stick with intel processors...especially if you end up using mental ray(which is one of max's render engine choices).
However, I have yet to see a 3gb ram/intel laptop sold off the shelf for less than 600cad.
Yeah sure, you could do 2gb with amd procs if you are just testing it out.
Lastly, check on max forums if the video card that your latop comes with will be able to handle the softwares demands. 3d apps demand quite a bit from the video card and you could end up disappointed if you do not exercise due diligence in this regard.
Of course, my recommendations are more in keeping with professional 3d work and like i said if you are simply testing the waters of 3d, the advice may or may not apply.
