IMHO, HP is better. But better yet, go for Lenovo. It is slightly more expensive (probably will cost you US1k) but it is a solid laptop.

As for extended warranty goes, I never go for it. I think its just a scam the retailers pull. When you have a problem and try to use the retailers warranty , they will give a thousand reasons why your problem is not covered under that warranty.

As for the manufacturers warranty goes, most manufacturers cover the whole of NA. My wife bought a Dell in US and the harddisk died on her. We called Dell US and they sent a replacement HD.

Cheers

Thanks Guys ,

In terms of build quality and after sales service how would you rate the following :

HP
Acer
Lenovo
Sony

Asking this coz these appear to be the most prospective choices .

Lenova - takes top spot for sure.. solid build (thinkpad is the best, previous IBM)

sony - way too overpriced crap with lots of plastic parts -->have proprietary software drivers, proprietary memory cards, and proprietary dead-end formats (UMD, MiniDisc). Not at all consumer friendly, costs to own and costs more to repair.

Pros: Brand name, good looks, sometimes have latest technology.

acer - build quality really poor-- can say truly disposable and their motto should be "for people who don't know better". Also customer service can be horrible to good, depending on ur problem.

Pros: Really cheap priced laptops, some people gets lucky and are happy.

HP/Compaq - good machines. Takes the second spot after Lenova.

I would say Dell is pretty good with respect to getting good value for money. I have 2 Inspiron laptops purchased from the US in the last 3 years and there have been no problems whatsoever. They are pretty inexpensive as well.

I agree on Lenovo ... I am using T61 - fantastic Machine before I had ThinkPad R51. IBM laptops are Good.

I like Toshiba too ... have used Tecra. Can't complain.

Eventually, You get what you paid for.

Thanks a lot everyone .

HP is costing USD 650/- and Lenovo 800/- . I think I will go with HP.

There s a mail in rebate which concerns me . Can I give a Canadian address on that or can I provide a friend's address in the US ?
