I would like to know if a business visitor from India is allowed to rent and drive car in canada, who is holding india driving license.
In case, this is specific to certain states / cities Please tell if Alberta - Edmonton is covered or not.

Here in Canada we have C.A.A. Canadian Automobile Association.
In the United States of America they have A.A.A. American Automobile Association.
There is a counter part there in India: Who are Indian Automobile Association.
With two Passport size pics or what ever the size that calls for, go to the Indian Counterpart and ask for an International Driver's License and pay for it.
While you are there get a set of international road signs and a hand book from them. Tell them it should be valid for the locations that you will be visiting. That will answer your question about the validity in different locations.
Just for trying, if you can write to any of the websites that permit you to hire a car overseas, and ask them for the requirements to get one and for cancellations. Then see if it works. If it does on the net, then you are just about there.
They always ask for a credit card to charge the rentals to.
Since you are from home, always take the insurance that they provide. The $15 that they charge per day will provide you with a peace of mind. Tell them that you need the coverage for the deductibles too. (No deductibles)
Currently they use GPS Navigation systems here. Otherwise ask for a local map when you pick up the rental. Google maps will provide you with door to door directions for your visit. Some rentals will print it for you too. (For a fee)
All you will need extra are your sun glasses, a coffee mug and a pilot. Now.. you are ALL set. Please remember that the turn signals here are on the left hand side and the wipers are operated by levers on the right. Familiarize yourself with the car before you even move an inch. Just walk around the car once and note all of the dings and scratches and take a picture and report it before you move it. If needed read the hand book in the glove compartment. Adjust your mirrors and check your instruments. See if the flaps work, before you take off. (By the by we drive on the opposite side and the speeds ate generally posted, but they are about 100 klicks)
Hope this helps.
Freddie.
