I am travelling to India in few weeks, I am a canadian citizen and have OCI. I have my indian Driving license and it is expiring in 2014.

as we are going for vacation in India so to be safe side i want to avoid to invite any trouble while in Vacation and driving in India.

Please get an IDP from the nearest CAA and you have nothing to worry.

Indian driving license is for citizens, though it is not mentioned specifically that you have to abandon your IDL after change in citizenship.
There is not much info about it on the net.

Have a safe trip...

To remain safe, I would suggest not to drive only IDL or IDP, just one knock to a bike/rikshaw, even without your fault and you will be in trouble. What will you do with IDL..do you still have the correct address on IDL? IDP would be relatively safer..

Hi Ritesh,
Why the hell do you need to invite issues, while on a holiday.?

Just ride the cab or rickshaw and have peace of mind,
I have never dared to drive in India, after being in canada, only for the reason, of not inviting troubles.

Enjoy your holidays

My 2 cents

Thanks a lot Hiren, Bhootnath and Peacock for inputs,

My Indian driving license have a correct home address,

what is my understanding and Indian police mentality is when Police see you have a International Driving Permit than most of the time Police are try to make more money from you than regular driver in India or try to create big issues either than just short it out issue and let it go.

-- If you are confident about your driving in India, use your valid Indian DL. That's what I've been doing - no problems - and it is legal. Do not complicate things by using the international driving permit. I agree with you when you mentioned the "police mentality".

Beware, they drive on left side, and in center and sometimes you will see them head on ;-)

Ideally, You should carry IDP along. Also be sure that a comprehensive third party liability insurance is taken for the vehicle you are driving.

During normal identification check a cop will not harass you for your foreign credentials barring few questions, He will have no reason.

In case you are involved in an accident or traffic violation. Prefer to pay the fine, Third party liability should cover most of the aspects. Till Jul 2012 most of the chalans were of Rs 100, now the fines are gone up but most of the first time penalties are either 500 or 1000. So better ask to pay it legally than paying illegally. A policeman cannot hold you or your vehicle for long without reason, if he is doing so he is building up bribe case on your patience.

I'll prefer a chauffeur driven rental SUV , when in India OR ask my friend/relative to be behind the wheels. I Remember I stopped driving, after my visa was stamped, to escape 11th hour horrors , Though I 'was' a skillful driver , could perfectly glide through 2 cows !
