I am leaving for India after a week and this will be the first time I shall be visiting India as a foreigner.
All these years I have driven both car and mobike in India without any worry (though I think the driving licence had expired long ago), but since now I am a foreigner, I want to be cautious about driving in India.
Can anyone on this forum give me precise information on what are the rules for foreigners to drive in India like
1 Can they drive in India for a short duration on their foreign driving licence, as is allowed in Ontario, Canada?
2. If not, should I get an international driving licence to be able to drive in India?

You'll need an IDP.

Question 1 : Can an NRI/foreigner drive a vehicle in India on the basis of
European license or driving license issued by any foreign country?
Answer : He can not. However, if he has obtained an IDP from his own
country and his country is a signatory to the 1949 Geneva Convention, he can drive in India the specified category of vehicle till the IDP is valid.

The only way you can drive in India (proper licence or no licence at all!) is to carry a few 100 Rupees notes in your pocket! Never mind if you commit an offence in the meanwhile!

Times have changed, change that from 100 Rupees TO 500 Rupees

I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible.
But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.
For Mumbai
its 50rs for a scooter
100rs for a bike
100-200 for Maruti800/Alto/Zen/Santro
200+ for esteem,
500+ corolla and higher..
Also that amount is for not having a license, if you dont have insurnace and double it..if you dont have PUC then triple if..ofc you can bargain if you are bribing for multiple offences...
