Hi FIdo,
Thanks for the reply. You did not comment about my elder son discontinuing from NIT in India. (NITs are the next level of Technical Universities after the IITs). Are degrees from Canadian Universities more accepted Internationally than from Indian NITs. Or are you advicing that I land and return back after my son completes the degree from India.

I have at last received the PPR. I am still confused. Freddie what would you recommend for me? My elder son is doing first year engg in an NIT in India (NRI seat). Should we move for good even him dropping out of NIT (may have to pay full course fee US$ 12,000 to get back transcripts). I am 47 years old. Younger completing 10th CBSE in middle East. Should we land and return and wait till our elder completes graduation from NIT? appreciate receiving your suggestions, Freddie and other seniors.

Thanks

You have been given excellent suggestions and the real facts of life. All I can do is add to it. Your prodding me into this discussion in the middle of the hot subject matter is unfair to us all. If you need personal attention, then you should post a PM to me. That way those who ever wants to chip in can continue doing it. Not that I don't want to voice my two bits. But what can I say?

If you take a look at how this country started prior to the advent of the motor vehicles, with horse drawn carts, you will come to know that one has to be jack of all trades and got to learn every thing from scratch and learn to do things all by yourself. So, some times we move from areas that render to an affluent life style has to be shed to economize here and come back to realities. You hit "TERRA FIRMA". So, if you come down with your kids and settle down, teach them how to live frugally. Also show them how to be self sufficient.

In the current times and with the current state of the economy, do not buy a house. Leave it for the last. Rent a place that has three bedrooms and let them have their own privacy and move on from there. I.e. if it suits your plans. These are my thoughts.

One that has completed grade 10 can get a little coaching between now and the August and do a small test at the school that he is going to enroll into and continue till grade 12 from there, if he excels at his studies, he can get a great start at the Universities.

For the one that has the first year can get into an Engineering Education at one of the Universities that has a good standing in the field in which he wants to get in.
Being a PR, I see no reason to pay the 12 grand that you are anticipating. But might be close to it if he lives on the campus. Go for OSAP etc and see where he can enroll. Or alternately get into a CO-OP program at, such as the Windsor University, OR Waterloo and there are many more, and take the courses, which will make it a lot simpler for him in later life to pay back the borrowings. All these suggestions are to make the maximum usage of the resources.

As regards to your funds and the assets, no need to liquidate them in India or anywhere else. Just declare them or if you don't want to, then, when they make any gains from year to year report only the gains that they made. But if you feel that the properties are well worth more and exceeds $100,000 Canadian, it becomes mandatory when you file your IT Return at the end of April, to report such holdings. Because it calls for it. The stock markets are still heading SOUTH and the end of march and the declaration of the profits and dividends that they might not declare will drag the indexes down further, so avoid them at all costs.

Your job skills are good and there is a call for the type of work that you do and with your experience and background, can get into either service or relief work at different plants, relieving individuals for a break. Call it contract or part time relieving. Or join a firm that does servicing the equipment. Alternately, find suitable suppliers of spare parts and hop from country to country or locations to location and service the equipment at different locations. For this, you start your own company. You may need to take a qualifying exam and get into the OACETT and the appropriate union too. Also you need to obtain a little Vocational guidance from some one that is in THAT particular teaching. (Faculty)

So, when you try to settle down, choose a location suitable to you, where in you can minimize the expenses and maximize the usefulness of the place of residence. When you do that you might miss a few frills and the company that you crave for, and just for a few years. How you swing all of these depends upon the skills you possess and the tact that have.

Let me just add a last paragraph, if you live in India and pay wealth tax and death taxes which will grab all or most of your assets, you will find that you will be better off staying out of India and claim the Canadian Citizenship at the end of three years and your family will come up better and winning. The plus side to all of this is, our so called health care that we get here will save you a few bucks ultimately and I find the service that the Doctor's provide is very good to excellent and need I add that it is FREE. The other points that are brought up are to be added to this and you will find that stepping into Canada is the best move that one makes for themselves and their children and if perchance their Parents are also included in the picture at some time in the future, then, you just started here in a NEWER class and currently it has NO comparable one anywhere on this planet.

There are so many others that have asked, Is it a good time now? All I can say is that there was no time in ones life like this and those who hesitate are the losers. You only get know the virtues of a good country and the systems that it has when you start enjoying it. So, get your goddarn tootsies in through the doors NOW.

Canada is TOPS and the people who live here are of a SUPERIOR class. We made it and let us keep it good and make it even better. What say all of you.!!

Freddie.

Hi CDs,
I am planning to land soon alone and the family shall land later. This is to see the situation and finish the procedures like SIN, Driving License, accommodation, bank account etc; As I understand it is OK to land alone as I am the principal applicant. I have the following questions,
1. I shall show the funds for the full family while landing and my family shall not bring funds. Hope this is Ok?
2. I shall apply for PR while landing, hope my family shall apply while they land ?
3. Can I apply for SIN before family lands? Does each member of family have separate SIN or they shall be added on the same SIN?

thanks

Hi

I would suggest that you land now and return back to KSA for three years. Let your wife and two sons land just before the expiry of the one year period permitted to land from the date of their medicals and they can also re-enter Canada within three years, so that they don't lose their PR status. By this time your son will complete his Engineering, as he is currently in the first year and in another three years of study will get him an Engineering degree. After that for Master's get your son into a good Canadian University as a PR, as the under graduation is costlier in Canada and this way your son will not lose one year of education and he will not lose his PR also.

Before you complete the permissible three year period in KSA, you can return back to Canada for good, thus saving some more money in KSA. In the meantime, let your second son complete his 12th grade in KSA and enter a good University in Canada. It is usually difficult for our kids who have studied the CBSE system to adapt to the school in Canada, especially from class 9 and above, because the way of teaching is different even though the CBSE standard is much higher and in high school the kids will have their own circle of friends and it will be difficult for the kids to break the barrier and be one among them. However, in the University level it is quite different and the kids will adjust well in Canada.

All the best.

Hi kuwaituser,
Thanks for your sincere advice. We shall mostly go by your advice. I needed one clarification. Is the landing date for all members of the family considered separately based on the landing date of each person for the sake of calculation of 730 days in 5 years? If not it makes no sense in family landing later.
Thanks

There are a couple of rules around landing -

- Primary applicant must land first. Dependents cannot land before the primary applicant.
- All members of the family with PR visa must land before the expiry of their medicals i.e. 1 year from the date of last medicals.
Since it's possible that different members did their medicals at different times, that date may be different for some members of the family.
- Once landed, everyone is a PR with equal rights. The primary applicant/dependent relationship ends there.
- PR residency days are counted from the date of landing - each person will have their own record. There is no longer a link between the primary applicant and other members of the family.
