May be religion was "created" to rule out certain guidelines that any decent citizen could follow and bring law and order to the society. As time went by, maybe those guidelines became more rigid, and organised religion, as we see today, took its place, which ultimately gave rise to fanaticism. May be God was projected as a "positive boogeyman" to create a scare in people, so that they would follow the rules, out of fear of hell or punishment. Or in case of pagan religion, the forces of nature that acted in a mysterious way (wind/fire/water/electricity) gave rise to the concept of God
I concur. And I will be the first one to admit that great, great philosophers have emerged from a faith, a religion. But I am not sure I am ready to embrace a religion because of its philosophy. The fundamentals are same across the board. Then there's the "institution" of religion that has to take it to the next level. I actually firmly believe in "karma" myself.
My grandfather used to say "you do your part and leave the rest to God". I did. Except I never had much regard for that second part of the sentence. Not that I had any beef with God...just that the sentence could do without the latter part you see
