And I do accept what you said about recruiters and textpad / wordpad .... You know what -- earlier once / twice I felt bad why wasn't I chosen despite my feeling comfortable in the skills ... so what if they wanted 4 yrs and I had only 2 ......... later when I had 4 yrs of experience I realized the difference of 2 years .
Do it but don't over do .... how much to do is a very subjective matter ...
Please do not have respect for members just coz they are senior in the forum ... who knows you might be smarter / more experienced than me ?

Fido.
I worked with TCS-Jamshedpur in the later part of 1990s. Our Resident Manager would market us to our client TISCO and thereafter get our release (to send abroad), with all sorts of hilarious/interesting excuses/stories. One of my colleagues was a Chemical Engineer with 3 in the Chemical Industry. He had no clue what a mainframe does or is. He was hired and after initial training (general) - he was sent for another 1.5 months of Mainframe training. But, he was marketed as a 2-3 years of Mainframe relevant experienced guy. One day there was an unrecoverable error which kept popping messages on the screen (not application specific) and folks heard him telling the client not to hit the keyboard hard.
These things happen and recruiters also take things with a pinch of salt.

Tip :
If you are say applying for a dB job. Feel free to put say OOAD (UML) experience (provided you do your homework/knowledge very well) in your resume as well apart from db ones. You will not really be guaged for OOAD/UML but it creates a good impression in the mind of the recruiter/manager. It shows how scalable you can be. So, if 2 guys stand in the same priority - chances are that you get selected.
I always had a little more detailed resume and lots of people criticized attimes. But, in most places, it worked. People got to know my skills/experience better before calling for the interview. But, in the very first para/page - try to get them glued and thereafter lead them more into it.
Also, no matter what you write - always do your homework to back it up.
After joining, in anycase, if a hire cannot perform they will eject the person. But, if you are smart - it will atleast give you an opportunity.
All The Best

Regarding faking, like someone else mentioned, depends on how much you fake. I met so many American colleagues of mine who fake too. When I say fake, it is more like enhancing. Let me give you an example. I know this guy who probably would have done some data loading in SAP SD module. He will put down his role in the project as SAP SD team lead or SAP Integration manager.
And whatever you put, you need to clear the interview anyways. So you can't have experience in QA, but put in your resume that you are a networking professional. Obviously you won't clear the interview.
And to all the naysayers in this thread, I will say just one thing. If we don't fake, someone else will. That's how the IT market is right now.
And recruiting in IT is a joke. I mean, have you guys seen the laundry list of skills given for any job requirement in US? They want system admins with MCSE and few other list of certifications, a graduate degree, expert knowledge in UNIX, linux, AIX, windows and a few other operating systems, networking, tcp/ip, all webservers in the world - websphere, weblogic, jboss and a few other stupid open source software which some IT manager purchased. All this for 15$/hr position.
I have recruiters who saw my resume with 3 yrs of work experience in Java + few years of academic projects, tell me that my resume does not have 'Core' java skill. Only then I realized I am missing 'core' keyword in my resume.
There are recruiters who told that I have 3 years of experience in Eclipse IDE, but they are looking for someone with some different XXX IDE experience. So they can't forward my resume to client. I have another recruiter tell me that he didn't shortlist my resume because it did not have MS Word in it where as the job requirement lists it. (I have Computer Science undergrad, Info systems Master's plus work experience as software programmer). I recently started small talking to recruiters to see what the hell they studied. Guess what ...they have degrees in - political science, biology, English ...
Do you guys think desi companies like TCS, Infy, Wipro don't ask their employees to fake their resume? I am pretty sure there are many seniors in this forum who have work experience in these companies and they know what I am talking about.

....... Best excuse I have heard .... good excuse for robbing , mugging , conning ............. Have you ever tried to think vice versa ...... that there might be honest candidates who might lose because of your faking ? ... Well its all in the mindset but as the OP said ... not to talk about ethics ... I better Hsssssshhhhhhhh ...
I am reminded of what a friend told me 2 years back - ' If you are confident you can do the job , fudge ' ...........
Clear a couple of certifications - OCP , MSDBA etc - that can add to your knowledge and lend credence to your resume .
Sorry I have no idea of IT neither we are yet in canada but want to share a story told to us by a Jewish friend of ours, who lives in a Swimming pool home in Markham. When he landed in Canada 40 yrs ago, the interviews letters were sent by mail. He did not have a decent place to live, neither the area he lived was decent and he assumed that all those interviews were not coming because of the address he had in his resume. He faked his address while bribing a post office guy and made sure all letters with that particular address but with his name were handed to him, with this he landed in his first job within few weeks. I think in 60's the addresses played a important role!! When I heard this story, I didn't find nothing wrong in it.
This has been done in past and will be done now too, we can't judge cause all circumstances are different.

It is true that necessity is the mother of all inventions(good and bad) and it is a dog eat dog world. One got to do what it takes to survive / excel. Padding helps and to some extent it is required to get noticed. Weather the Canadian employers are too fussy about Canadian experience because of excessive padding or the job seekers feel Canadian employers are very fussy is a chicken first or egg first situation. Both are impossible to change. The successful stories mentioned all put some effort to learn the tricks of the trade and with suitable padding became successful stories.
The question asked is not about padding but faking. No effort but only to fake and make it successful. It was a frank question and I guess it was answered with equal frankness.
Another takeaway or key learning from the above posts is how the recruiters behave and how to write the resume.
We all know for eg someone who has done Masters in Computer Science would at least know MS Word, however his resume was not considered as MS Word was not mentioned in his resume.
Another eg. I am a CA from India, CPA from USA, CGA ( will complete soon) here in Canada, however one recuriter still asked me if I knew how to do " Bank Reconciliation" . In this particular instance even at the risk of losing whatever chance I had - I told the recruiter that they should study what a degree means/ represents before asking such questions of a candidate. It implies they have very little grasp on the subject matter they are interviewing candidates for.
So even if it seems trivial, mention all the skills you have, all the softwares you know in your resume and yes you may have to "upsell' some of the work done.
Other CD's may add similar experiences about resume writing errors and offer advice please.
Thanks,
RJ
