However, I realize that my post might have been misunderstood in the manner that I am asking for ways to bargain on price. No, I have already done the comparisons for price and that is why I wrote that this dealer's price seems to be (much) lower than all others, including private sale, and that is a bit confusing.

What I am trying to get at is what to see in the car itself - like engine, boot, condition, accidents and history or whatever, and how to do that. So basically:

1. How to judge the condition of the car itself (self test and or test by some agency - and how much would an agency cost)

2. Once the above is done, then how to put a price to the condition of the car (assuming I find the car to be acceptable - because I am looking at a really good condition car, rather than looking for a bargain on price compared to the condition of the car). Do the testing agency also advise you the acceptable price?

Chandresh,

If the cost of the car is over $7000, I would suggest you have the car inspected at this location :
http://www.apa.ca/template.asp?DocID=13

I have used his services for atleast 3-4 cars and 100% satisfied each time. His services SEEM expensive, but if you watch him do the inspection and the detailed report - it is worth it.

For buying from a used car dealer - note the VIN#, check the mileage, obvious damages and paint jobs, test drive for noise from engine, gear shifting, turning and bumps (switch off the radio/ and a/c, preferably keep the windows open), test the a/c cooling, tires, jumpers, front radiator for originality/repair, check for original factory sticker on the inside of the hood and on the driver side door panel.

If you find the initial inspection to be satisfactory and the price within your range, then make a conditional purchase with the dealer that you will take the car to above link for final inspection prior to full payment. If the seller is genuine, he will have no problem.

Before you buy CARFAX report, check with 'safecar' above - sometimes he offers the report himself at discounted price.

Good luck.

Hiren

Edit : Many dealers list unavailable cars at very low prices and when you call them, they tell you that it is already sold and will try to sell another vehicle. Just call them and confirm before you head out.

When I talked to him yesterday evening, I had a feeling that this is the case (the way he talked about this car), and infact told him that if the car is sold before I go to him, he should call me. But I know that will not happen, so I have to call him before I go there tonight. And if he calls me and I find that the car does not exist, I will find ways to waste his time too.

My two cents is it is not worth it trying to get back at them. This sort of gimic exists at all levels for all products. Their job is to get you in the door first. And come on, we are talking about a Corolla here. If you miss out on this, you are left with..umm...a trillion or more of them :)

Well, as expected, the car is SOLD!

However, he said he has one more which just came in 3 hrs ago and he has Carproof for that.

But I decided not to go. Now looking at other options.

Sure - but it wont be at comparable price as last one.
Good you did not waste your time visiting him.
