I don’t think that you have to get personal tutor till grade 7 or up. Till grade 7 it is manageable for an average kid, after that it becomes bit harder, especially Math and Science. If you don’t have time to teach your kid thn I think it would be a good idea to get a tutor from grade 7 onwards.

For many of us who grew up in an education system that is quite different from what we have here, I would suggest that we talk to our kids about school, understand their curriculum as they go through it, learn from them and then coach them. I have seen it working wonders. Most importantly we should work with the class curriculum and not work ahead of it. Even if it is as simple as addition or subtraction, trying to teach it the way we learnt it before they are taught in the school may end up confusing them. I was quite amazed at the way my daughter was taught "regrouping" and thankful that I never tried to teach him "carrying over" while adding.
For those of you who feel that their isnt much stress on "bookish" knowledge in Canada and preferred the Indian system, here is the NCERT website where you can download all the books from Grade 1-12.
