yeah that sounds very autocratic.
i don't understand why religion has to be such a touchy topic.
what's wrong with discussing religion as long as no one is calling names, ridiculing or belittling anyone else
and India/PAK relation and interaction is the top most thing on every Indian's (and possibly Paki's) mind, so what's wrong in talking about it?
are we such a prudish, politically-correct, insecure and drab bunch of folks?
if every discussion about india/pak relation or religion is not allowed then i guess let's just discuss job postings and the latest penny mining stock....

There is no such thing as unfettered freedom. Freedom always comes with responsibilities, however liberal you want to be.

If you call jokes about human anatomy acceptable, there is little one can do but wonder where we are getting. If discussions border on spreading hatred (no matter what religion the poster belongs to), and people hide under the theory of something called "relative" or "subjective", there can be no rules whatever - be it this forum or anywhere else.

If everyone could ignore every utterance on the internet, and not feel offended, we are no better than zombies. I am not sure I want to be one.

By the way, it is "Heil Hitler", and not as mentioned.

I see that some discussions are hijacked, some goes nowhere, some getting personal, rather than the topic/issue. Its abusing the privilage. Moderators have no choice but to put the foot down. Good idea. I support it.
OTOH, instead of locking, is there a way to remove a thread from charcha?

No, we Desi's are highly sensitive and get offended very easily on drop of a hat.

On a side note, I believe mods actions are to some extent justified as the forum shouldn't become a battleground. However, locking religious, Indo-Pak threads are equally not warranted as long as there's no name calling, or any mention of hatred. In that instance as well, merely delete a post or warn the poster must suffice instead of barring everyone to voice their healthy and logical opinions. Isn't it a beauty of Internet?

There should be a middle ground - for Posters to practice restrain, not to offend anyone, refrain from name calling, abuse, slurs, etc., and for Mods not to be highly sensitive to not let others voice their opinions however controversial the topic is.

It is well said that -- Power makes a person corrupt and absoloute power makes a person absoloutely corrupt. Morning rain is acting as censor board, why cant anyone censor his comments when he admitted that not only he consumes natcotics but he sells narcotics also. He said this is cash crop produced in BC.
So, if we have druggies and drug dealers are scensors and global moderators in this forum then God save us. I have yet to see a genuine or constructive guidance by morning rain in this forum and he is global moderator. What a farce ?
Permission to play or not to play in IPL requires no censor by anyone.

Let me be clear I am not against a mod locking a thread for a "reasonable reason".

A reason "of not seeing anything positive out of this thread" is not a reasonable reason. Or a mod can lock a thread "without providing any reason" is authoritarian.

In my thread, there is no name calling, there is nothing negative in the thread, people are giving their opinions. Why lock the thread? It really isn't a duplicate but even if it was this is not the reason for locking it.

There should be clear *JUSTIFIED* reasons for locking the thread e.g.

- Abusive language/swearing
- Insulting/personal attacks
- spamming

Anyway I really don't care that my thread is locked but the reason I raised this thread was I felt we are too hasty on locking threads or asking posters to remove their post on grounds of racism, religion insulting etc when if you look at it there is nothing on those grounds. If you swear against a religion delete it, if you point something negative about a religion (in a polite manner) then no grounds of deleting it e.g. I as a Hindu would not mind someone posting a thread on "Is cow worship really sensible?". Its a debate and a logical question. But yes if the thread was something like "Hindus are morons for worshiping cows" than go ahead and delete it.

Folks ,

We must recognize that this forum caters to all S E Asian countries including India & Pak .

Religion / country rivalry is a very sensitive topic and more often than not , its been observed that threads involving these on CD run into high tempers which is un desirable as Canadian Desi is not an Indian forum but a 'Desi' forum which recognizes Indians / Pakistanis & Bangla Deshis alike .

Nothing may have happened in the locked thread till that time , but going historically it risked going off the tangent and hurting a particular group .

Under these lines , the mod's action is not completely unjustified . Canadian Desi is not a free for all forum where bashing and abusing takes place and we appreciate it for that .
