Hi,
I've read in this forum that there are many cases where newly landed immigrants apply for CCTB and then return back to their own countries, only to receive CCTB banked into their Canadian bank accounts.
I am also in this predicament, although I was at the time of application, very naive and did not understand the consequence of my actions. It is not that I wanted to deliberately cheat the Canadian government, I had a genuine reason to leave Canada for some time (I was the Bone marrow donor for a cancer victim). It has been a year now that I have been receiving the monies and now we plan to return to Canada. My questions are:
1) How many of you have been through similar situations? Pls share your experiences.
2) How and when will the CRA find out about our absence from Canada?
3) Has anyone slipped their radar and gotten scott-free?
4) How many of you were fined and for how much?

Answer to all Q - you have to file income tax return for you and your spouse to claim CCTB.

No matter how minimal the chances of getting caught are, it is not worth hiding this fact. Because if it is found out, then the penalties are much more than the amount you have received as a benefit. The later they find, harsher becomes the penalty due to the interest charged..
