One can still cross. I have done it when I lost my job and was unemployed for 4 months or so and I crossed the border. The officer asked my purpose of visit - I said I was visiting to take care of my investments. They asked me where I worked, I said nowhere; they asked me about my prior status in the US, I told them. The officer actually sympathized with my job loss, wished me luck and I went on my way.

I might be wrong, but I for one believe there's always a reason for someone to be pulled over and questioned for an extended period of time. It does not mean the person has done something wrong, it can be something as simple as the person having something in their history that causes the sense of anomaly to the officers.

I don't believe in one sided stories.
