Winter Arriving , rather its here already.
Lets consolidate a checklist of all preparation activities we should do , things to buy , things to take care of . I am also interested in the activities to be done by independent home owners.

Note : there were previous discussions on CD but mostly restricted to clothing
(and winter tires).

Let the suggestions coming as per your experiences, we'll consolidate & reorganise all thoughts later.

Shooting few examples :

THINGS TO BUY :
- kids mittons , shoes
- Check on snow shoes
- Clothing - We had few earlier links from CDs on this topic

HEALTH :
- Flu injections for family
- prepare to readjust sleep cycle to cater for delays due to snow
- precautions for kids ?
- skin care - Stock up the lotions and chapsticks

FOR HOME OWNERS
- Shovel Buying new or Checking durability of existing one. Can we avoid shoveling ?
- checking the possible source of heat escape in the house
- switch ONs and Offs , when out or in home?
- for lawns, home outdoors ?
- for roof
- energy saving

- Switch off water valves that lead water to the backyard / side yards.
- COVER THE AC - Take care that plastic covers may cause rust. cover the top with a ply and give breathing space to AC from sideways. Also check time to time if rats are not making home there.
- Stuff that would be ruined in minus temperatures, move it from garage to basement.
- Cleanup backyard, cover BBQ machine.

COMMUTE
- driving in snow
- precautions for vehicles parked in snow
- auto start in vehicle
- impact for those who take public transort - any experience ?
- Buy windshield fluids, ice scrapers, store them in the trunk of the car

ENTERTAINMENT & LEISURE ACTIVITIES
- possible indoor & outdoor activities

any links to cover these topics are welcome.

Thanks, Over to Experienced CDs...

Switch off water valves that lead water to the backyard / side yards.
Cover your AC.
Stuff that would be ruined in minus temperatures, move it from garage to basement.
Cleanup backyard, cover BBQ machine.
Buy windshield fluids, ice scrapers, store them in the trunk of the car.

Feel free to copy these above to consolidate one list.

I think by snow shoes you mean boots, because snow shoes are used in the wilderness for trekking. They look like this: http://3dsmodels.com/textures/Objects/758045.JPG.

If you take public transit I really recommend you buy good winter boots if you have to wait outside. Something waterproof. Don't worry about them being pretty. You can tuck your pant legs in too and keep them dry. Keep nice shoes at the office and change when you get there.

If you get salt on your boots or shoes wash it off each night. There is salt on all the roads and sidewalks to keep cars and people from slipping. It ruins leather over time.

It's good for kids to have a snowsuit, not just a jacket, so they can play outside and stay warm.

For adults I recommend a longer winter jacket that will cover your bum because it will get cold.

Take vitamin D supplement if you need to. Most Canadians are low in vitamin D from October - April. We don't get enough sun. Your doctor can do a bloodtest if you are unsure. Low vitamin D can cause seasonal affective disorder - meaning you will feel sad and less energetic during the winter months.

Is that you do all the things you set out to do
And live your life the way you love

I have heard/read that AC will rust even more quickly if you cover it with plastic sheet as moisture gets trapped inside the plastic sheet. See http://www.familyhandyman.com/DIY-Projects/Heating---Cooling/Air-Conditioning---Cooling/covering-your-air-conditioner-condenser-unit

True. I cover the top with a hard flat material that doesn't let snow fall in the AC (and put a couple of bricks on top) leaving all four sides of the AC naked.

Another tip. Store an ice scraper (for windshield) in your car(s).
