I have been to Montreal for a week, and I didn't found any problem without French. But yes it's beeter to know the French if you wanna well settle in Quebec and want to do a good job.

Yes this is also good thing that Quebec Govt. pays you for learning of French.

I am planning to come to Canada in next few months and yet to deceide on a place to live , please advice me how to get my qualification assessed by Canadian Universities Toronto or Montreal or any other Universities.

Can any body help me in this ? Also I have heard that if you stay in Quebec and take a French class you are paid 500 $ per month , I think that is a good way for any immigrant so far as depliting of his own resources are concerned .

Also please tell me what is the cost of living in Montreal , and average earning of an immigrant.

Thnx

Thank goodness for this exact thread! I've been wondering for a while about which I should start out in when I go to Canada next spring. I have a question: Is it possible to commute to GTA daily from Montreal? Also, I've heard that Montreal is much nicer than GTA, but there's less settlement services/help for newcomers. For an American like me, would I really need these fee-based services since I already know English? Would just accomodations (sp?) do? I wouldn't mind working under-the-table whilst learning French (and getting paid the 500 CAD by the government for being an active learner) and preparing for the CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, Linux+, and any other certifications I may need for my career. Can anyone give me (and the rest of us) detailed information on what it's like to land in (start out in) Montreal, perhaps even comparing it to the GTA? We would all thank whoever would write about Montreal here. Maybe a start would be expanding upon the first post in this thread.

PS: I'm also looking for a very vibrant gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender community and blend of ethnic backgrounds and I heard that Montreal has it all. I really like the fact that Montreal has such diverse culture whilst retaining both official languages (especially French) in the city. :-)

Adam relax..you are/will be in French country.. Although catholic, Mtl has a blend of Gay/Lesbian/Transgender cultures and would be the ideal place to settle in. However, if you want to commute to the GTA everyday, then it would not be feasible on a day to day basis...That's cos it takes approx 6-6.5 hrs by car (high speed and non stop) to reach Mtl from Toronto and vice versa. However, you can do that on a weekly basis.
Oh and btw...welcome To Canada , O disheartened MichaelMoore Fan-aka a die hard Democrat aka an ardent George Bush/ Rush Limbaugh/Bill O'Reiley Hater :D

I've been thinking about coming to live in Canada since around last April, which was _well_ before this terrible election.

I figured that it wouldn't be feasible to commute GTA <---> MTL daily, as I punched it up on MapQuest.com and it said that the cities were about 600 km apart! LOL

I really would like to get the feel of both cities though and can't make up my mind because I bet both are good (and I didn't forget about Vancouver either! I want to save that for much later on).

Has anyone ever lived back & fourth like one week GTA, next week MTL, etc.?

Adam..you may not see the Flyers..but you will definately get to see the following :-

1.) The Habs / The Leafs
2.) The Raptors if you like basketball & of 'cos
3.) Really vibrant cities....

Man I am stuck up in the mid-west for the next 8 months or so... I am already missing Ottawa...but hope to return there some day again....

Are you planning on setting up base there ? Or you want to settle there for a few months or so... If the latter, then you can split the difference .

Chris, a member of this forum, has helped us with his valuable insight abt life in Mtl.
Be aware that Fracofone's really hate Dubya and his ilk :D ( I can say that off hand as my ex landlady hated Dubya's guts out)....

BTW..Gay marriage is allowed in BC, Ontario ans Quebec... So you are well off in Mtl and Toronto or Vancouver..... avoid Alberta (thats ummm George Bush's territory in Canada :D) ....

Why you want to comute on regular basis. If you are going to start a new settlement, you can settle in Montreal itself.

Yes this is fine, that the distance from Montreal to Toronto is Appx.600 km, and it takes appx 5 hrs, by road Journey.

Montreal is very beautiful city, and Toronto is also a good city in other way, like business opportunity and job opportunity wise.

Small piece of advice to all those who intend to settle in Toronto, see that you hunt for your appartment whenever u r looking to rent one ,always look for one near the vast subway line this city has, you can be moving in and around the city with great ease and comfort. Toronto has very good mass transport system in place, more near u r a subway station more faster u can commute to any corner of the city
Buses too are there but yet trains are more better and quicker for long distance travelling, and the best part is u pay one fare to travell for 1 stop or your travell to the last station on the route
Do not rent an appartment in hurry, take your time to locate one near the subway station, you are sure to get one in your budget
1 BR=700-900 $
2BR=900-1100$
3BR=1100-1400$
give or take some 10 % and depending on the area
