Perhaps the marginal utility is not high enough for most of the car buyers.

Regular maintenance like petty Oil change is a killer by itself in luxury cars .

From personal experience I can say that it is not Marginal utility - considering various monetary and non monetary factors of life.

Sir ,

The sales statistics goes against your personal experience ...

You do find a lot of Camrys or Accords vs Corollas and Civics but the same proportion does not hold true for BMWs and Mercs implying that for most people do not feel that they will get equivalent extra benefit from a Merc or a BMW as compared to the extra payment they would make upfront as well as in maintenance.

If needed , I might prefer buying 2 cars for the price of a single Merc as my utility would be doubled.

If you shop around well you will find the same car with exact specs much cheaper from a dealer lot than a private seller unless its a distress sale . Many a times you may end up getting extended warranty for relatively cheap if negotiated well.
Car should be bought for cash as it doesn't give you a false sense of affording more than you actually can . Car finance turns into upside down loan very quickly .
Finance is worth if either you can write it off or you are investment savvy person who can make more than finance rates offered by dealer .

it is not necessary that all the time you will get best/good car when you do a private deal....sometime you get lemon too.

most of the people in private deal hiding facts about any issues in the car. let me give you a example:

Guess person is selling car in Kijiji with Safety and Emission test and car has a some minor oil leakage underneath between engine and transmission. He did a power wash at engine area and put a AD for car sale

****OIL LEAKAGE IS NOT A PART OF THE SAFETY UNLESS IS DROPING ON EXAUAST SYSTEM****

Now you bought that car and very happy that you got $1000 cheaper than dealer and you are smiling internally...wow.

after few days you show some oil drops on your driveway and decide to show a tech about the oil leakage issue. Now Tech is telling you that your car have oil leakage and is coming from rear main seal.....

now the story start, to replace rear main seal you have to bring down transmission and depends on the model will cost you around $1500 to $2500....keep in mind oil seal price is only between $20 to $30.

do you think that guy who sold the car to you he is going to take responsibility and will return your money?? answer is NO...

if you purchase car from the dealer than within certain time dealer has to look after for you or you can go with legal action with MTO against dealer.

Majority of private sellers are genuine (from my personal experience).
Just buy it from some old italian lady or a old white man.
Sometimes you have got to take risks when buying for $ 3000 and all.
As I have said before, I once bought a toyota corolla for $ 3600 and sold it for $ 3800 after riding it for atleast 40,000 kms.
Dealers have more options of selling bad cars to you as they buy from auction and they rely on their mechanic to fix it.

Atleast private sellers have used it for their personal use and many white people donot lie.
